Well, that's not enough information to answer the question!

Does the man look poor or oppressed?

Have I ever done anything to him that would inspire him to attack?

Could we run away?

What does my wife think?

What about the kids?

Could I possibly swing the gun like a club and knock the knife out of his hand?

What does the law say about this situation?

Does the pistol have appropriate safety built into it?

Why am I carrying a loaded gun anyway, and what kind of message does this send to society and to my children?

Is it possible he'd be happy with just killing me?

Does he definitely want to kill me, or would he be content just to wound me?

If I were to grab his knees and hold on, could my family get away while he was stabbing me?

Why is this street so deserted?

We need to raise taxes, have paint and weed day and make this happier, healthier street that would discourage such behavior.

In the situation described here, I'd sidestep his foolish charge, crush his ear or the back edge of his jaw with a straight jab from my position on his side, and relieve him of his knife as he fell to the ground wondering if his head was still attached.

Depending on the rate of his recovery from this, and his demeanor after getting sucker punched, I might plant my gerber folding knife (that I don't leave the house without) in the base of his skull, or just put the douche in a half nelson w/ a crossface (transitioning to a bare naked choke), and swing my legs into a figure 4 around his lower ribcage where I could easily ride his back, keep him out of breath, and stretch his neck out if he tries anything stupid.

I'd reserve the hardballer action for someone who actually had a firearm, and in that case you'd hear two bangs followed shortly by the sound of a man hitting the ground like a tree falling..

I find that remark discriminatory against "islamic" people.  They can be anything they want, even terrorists!
