I have a mad multicoloured one that, hopefully, can be seen against most backgrounds.

What's better than this?

I've tossed together several paks, but this is the first time I ever took the time to make or change any of my crosshairs. I made this one for the BFG.

Different crosshairs are not advantageous really, it's just practicing and getting used to it.

I've found that the lime colored crosshairs will show up the best. I think this is due to the quake palette and it's tendency to use sombre browns, greys etc and to not use bright, loud colors. I think some of the really good railers would have insight into which is best.

I would use other crosshairs, but I get black boxes (lines) around them.

I always prefer the small and to the point crosshairs, like a simple dot or cross. I've made a few .crosshairs. in the past and the ones I use the most are the white 'x' (1-w), the little green square (4-g) and the one with the three yellow dots (13-y). As long as the color is right I don't think it matters that much.

All of my last several paks have used the same crosshairs. I don't know if the stock Q2 crosshairs are the same way, but the main ones that used were centered a little bit too high. It was a bit of a problem with the railgun. If someone was standing on an overlooking ledge and I took a shot at them, a lot of times I'd end up hitting the ledge just under their feet even though the center of my crosshair was dead on them. I started doing up a new pak this week and tweaked some of the crosshairs a bit. Now my railgun cross is perfectly centered, but only if you've got your config set to fire from the center. I'd say that a larger sized cross can actually help sometimes, especially with a weapon like a railgun or machinegun. If someone is strafing left or right, if I get the crosshair completely ahead of them, I'll usually hit them.

Yea, because your weapon doesn't fire from the center of your screen (the view origin), you can actually never have a crosshair that will always precisely show you where you'll hit at any distance. Also, some older clients might assume that the width/height of your crosshair images is like 8x8px or something, which will obviously throw off how it centers the crosshair.

Btw, I kind of like Toxic's, but I think I would personally find it too large/busy.
