The pain sounds are awesome indicators of what kind of damage you're doing, and learning them is vital. Those sounds are the main reason why Q2 doesn't need hit sounds... it already has the blood\armor particles and the pain sounds to act as them. Best thing is, they don't break the immersion of the game by being a lame *beep*. Over time, you'll develop a keen sense for what it will take to get that frag. Switching weapons depending on the situation is one of the most important things. A common example is scoring a rail hit on someone, they survive, but you hear an anguished "graah". Instead of trying to get another rail hit, you can predict that they only have a little bit of health left, so switching to something easier to hit with like the cg or ssg will bring them down faster.

Lots of situations like that. Figuring out what they are and what to do about them simply takes lots of practice.

I need some help brightening up the game. When I play with OpenGL, vid_gamma doesn't help brighten the game for me. When I use r_fullbright 1, it's perfect but that command doesn't work online. Is there some way I can have the game super bright without having to use custom textures? This leads me to another question I have. Whenever I use pak for custom textures, and the pak is missing maps or some other files, it plays some replay of someone playing singleplayer. Is there away to turn that off? It's annoying.

The single player demos are normal and have always played when the standard q2 client first loads. They are always disabled in r1q2.

The gl_modulate command is what you want to change to change the brightness. Then immediately type vid_restart to see the changes.

I usually use:
gl_modulate 3

vid_gamma just can't get any love around here....

Don't worry gamma, I know YOU are the actual command behind the game brightness setting in the menu.

In my pak when you hit someone the pain sound is replaced by a voice, it says "75" "50" and if 25 or below it says "Kill me now!"...that and when I grab the mega it says "I GOT THE POWA!"

Another question here. I tried looking for where the game holds textures for the guns. Which pak are they in? pak1?
