been playing now for a couple of months....mostly on the vanilla server. Its fairly obvious that some playing here have a huge advantage in that they spawn w/ substantial armor (at least, substantially more than me). Am i missing something. Its fairly common, especially w/ the experienced/clan players.
Please help a noob and tell me what gives.

On Vanilla, players don't spawn with armor.  Since the game has been out for a long time, some players have played a lot and are hard to beat.  Just stick with it.

Try spectating by typing

spectator 1

at the console.  You can then watch players play and learn from them.  Type

spectator 0

at the console to go back to playing.

Yeah, impossible to spawn with any armor or a weapon besides blaster on vanilla..  or mutant.
Alot of players have been at this for + years,  It's a kickass game worth sticking with

I understand that there are some great players out there, and I don't expect that I would b able to remotely challenge them at this early junction.
But there is absolutely no doubt that some are able to take punishment, I would never b able to take.
The clearest example comes when u make a kill (hard earned) and the player respawns right next to u, and u immediately hit him again w/ a RL to no avail. One supershotgun hit, much less a RL splash,  woulda taken me out in this example, yet some are constantly able to withstand this kind of assault.
This example has happened in many instances, and reinforced my belief that some were spawning w/ armor.
If it is not armor..... then what is it?  Connection? config file? Version?

Teleporter destinations look the same as spawn pads and in some cases are placed at the same position. Are you refering to players coming through a teleporter?

Also understand that it takes both barels of the super shotgun to blast through a person. Each pellet does 6 damage, there are roughly 20 pellets doing 120 damage. So you have to hit them with 83% of the spread. Anything less and they will survive.

Rocket spread rarely does 100 damage. A direct hit does 100 + random 20 damage. So a direct hit should always take out a new spawner. But always expect to take out any player with 2 rocket spreads. Never rely on only 1.

As for railguns, stimpacks and armor shards are very common. Railguns do exactly 100 damage. A player with 102 health or 100 health and 2 armor will survive a single rail shot.

Regular shotguns do only about 48 damage total. So regular shotguns take 3 hits to kill anyone.

Never take for granted that any player will die in one hit. Always shoot until you see the death message.

As mentioned before, players glowing yellow have spawn protection. This keeps spawn campers from killing players while they are defensless. It only lasts for about  a second. If you shoot too many players with spawn protection, you will get punished by dying yourself.

If you want more experience seeing how this damage works, then try using a machinegun to "clean up" the remaining health of a player that you think should be dead. It will give you a better idea of just how close you got to killing them the first time.

we are faster , smarter , and can listen alot better just keep playing and it will all be routine.

and yes if u hit someone right after spawn they have a shield. so u gonna give it a split second before u attack, this shield makes a distinct noise when u hit.

You will notice that when you get hurt, or when someone else gets hurt, they will make slightly different noises depending on how hurt they are.

Learn these noises for the male and female models especially.


If you didn't hear the "ugh" or "agh" of someone gettin hurt, you didn't take any health from them.
If you weren't shooting someone and still heard the noise, they fell, got smashed by something moving or blew themself up with nades or rockets.


If it was really loud and painful sounding, they are very hurt and about to die.

anything in between and you're just hurtin them a little bit at a time and/or knocking off armor.


I usually play with super shotgun, railgun, or rocket launcher and then listen for the "OW I'm really hurt" sound. Then I mop up with the chaingun or whatever I have that will spray lots of shit out there quickly.

This tend to work pretty well to get kills in FFA.


The attached file is a zip with the stock player hurt sounds for the male models in quake 2.
Listen to them a bit and you'll be able to discern a little better how injured your opponents are.

Some people even go so far as to make custom sounds for these and place them in the q2 folders that say how much someone got hurt in plain english "HURT 25!"

I do modding. I've been through the game source so much that not knowing this stuff would be embarrassing. Beyond that, Quake 2 has a very strategic and paced game play. It may be fast paced, but it's always predictable to a certain degree. Knowing how much damage a machinegun does vs. a chaingun, or how much total damage can be done by a SSG is a little in depth. But knowing that it takes 2 rocket splashes on average, or that railguns do exactly 100 damage is something that you'll pick up right away without having to think twice. It's as simple as knowing how much health you get from a health pack, or how much ammo you pick up.

The TS Anticheat hash list doesn't flag it, so all is "legal" that isn't flagged. I do agree though, it's pretty lame. I've tested out a few paks containing such audible health point sounds. It was REEEEEALLY annoying when playing around with it on vanilla with more than 15 people on a smaller map, all you could hear was "25, 50, 25, 25, 75, 50" all over the god damned place. So yeah, such "custom sounds" are bullshit for FFA as they destroy your ability to hear anything else. It's much better for TDM. But in my opinion, if a TDM player is using that shit, it's lame and tip-toeing right up to that line between legit and cheating. (I say again, just MY opinion)

I suppose in modding you would pick that stuff up more than some one who just plays the game like myself, even if i have pleen playing since it's release. I of course know about the two rockets and one rail kills, i was more referring to the info about the shotgun, ssg. I just never looked that in depth, but glad to know it now, thanks for that.

Definitely. Your opponent may not be using such modified files, and in my opinion, there's quite a few modified sound files that should be added to the AC hash list when playing on the TDM servers:

• loud or modified footsteps
• loud or modified railgun hum
• modified pain sounds
• loud or modified player spawn/teleporter sound
• loud or modified water sounds
• loud or modified door and platform sounds

I might've said "loud/modified BFG hum", but I've never seen a BFG laying around on any of the TDM servers. There's probably a few other sounds that I'm forgetting.

As Dervish mentioned, it isn't that hard to train your ears into knowing what the original pain sounds indicate anyways.
