Except, vanilla is comprised mostly of the single-player maps, which were at no point freely distributable. So, you may be SOL unless you'd like to purchase a legit copy of q2, or find it some other way.

Many of them have been modified with certain shortcuts through walls and teleporters to make the map less like a linear hallway and more circular like a deathmatch map. I'm pretty sure the "all-maps.zip" has them all. You'll need the "all-sounds.zip", "all-env.zip" and the "all-textures.zip" too. I'd recommend NOT downloading the "all-players.zip". It's half a gig and makes playing pretty annoying sometimes when some people use some of the more retarded models and skins.

There are thousands of custom maps. Map management in Quake 2 is one of the hardest things a new user has to learn. Not only will you have maps for vanilla but you will have map downloads to other mod folders if you play other mods. Many of them can be duplicates. This happens when you play a map on a mod before you play it on a vanilla server.

Quake 2 downloads maps and environments and textures from the servers as needed. It places them in the quake2\modname\ tree for each mod you play. In the case of vanilla, I believe it will place them in the quake2\baseq2\ tree since vanilla is "unmodded" quake2. This is a Good Thing(tm). The fact those maps exist in that tree means they will be available for all mods you play. However, this scheme means you could have more than one copy of the same maps for different mods.

The original intent of this system was to allow mods to avoid map name conflicts. Mostly it leads to duplication. If you've played it on vanilla, you won't duplicate it in other mods, you will already have it.

You can fix the duplication but it takes a lot of work. You have to inspect the maps and their associated files for each mod and compare them to the maps in the baseq2 tree. If you don't find them there, you move them into that tree and their proper folders. This makes them available for all mods. Doing it manually is a PITA.

There is a tool called DoubleKiller that will scan directory trees and identify duplicate files and you can use it to delete or move them but you must be very careful to set the options for identical names, sizes and CRC in order to find actual dupes in your quake2 tree. Once you have identified the duplicates it usually takes some skill to move or delete only as appropriate. DoubleKiller is also a nice tool for cleaning up your porn collection. ;)

You must decide to move or delete.
If the file is duplicated in the baseq2 tree and in a mod tree, delete it from the mod tree.
If the file is duplicated in one or more mod trees but doesn't show in the baseq2 tree, move one of the mod tree files into the corresponding folder in the baseq2 tree, then delete any mod duplicates.

If you have oodles of disk space, don't worry about it at all. Quake2 is a very old game and none of the entities used in the game take up very much disk space compared with more modern games.

Echon implemented cl_downloadtobase in EGL, which is a damn nice feature, and wish more devs picked up on it. What this does is simply download everything to baseq2/ so all of the aforementioned problems simply dissapear. If you prefer EGL, I'd reccomend setting that. Otherwise, it's not *that* big of a deal. Every once in a while I just merge any fat folders with baseq2, and overwrite any doubles. But in all reality, it's not something that comes up too often.
