xatrix maps

Salutations,

Recently there have been a flurry of new maps added to xatrix, mostly by way of the r1q2 override mechanism.  Most of the recent maps were converted by spawngirl and EXTERMINADER.

Personally I think many of these conversions are awesome. 

Of course, not too surprisingly the flood of new maps generated some complaints about the resulting lengthy downloads.  There are some kickass maps here, but also some have massive amounts of associated textures, envs, and sounds.

The resulting drama seems to have escalated to a point where now both EXTERMINADER and spawngirl have asked me to remove their overrides.

Reluctantly, I have temporarily removed them.  But look at this list!  There are some awesome maps here:

So.... that is the current status. 

I'm conflicted about how to proceed.  Personally I would like to see many of these maps back on the server.  Some of them are really fun.

I would personally love to play all those maps.  Especially since I prefer to play xatrix over all other types.  But as it is, if there are 7 people playing, but I have to download a new map, I detour over to vanilla unfortunately.  If there was a map pak, now then I would download and burn to cd at work and then problem solved

Xatrix is great.  New maps are always welcome for me.  There are some lengthy downloads on the new overriden(?) maps but in my experience it's been worth the wait EVERY time.  Put the overrides back!

Any map pak would quickly become out of date at the rate new maps are being added but a basic map pack would be nice.  Can't see one in the map pack downloads section.

It would not be tough to make an archive containing the .bsp files.

But many of these maps have large texture/env/sounds dependencies.

I don't know an easy way to figure out the set of baseq2/* files needed by a collection of .bsp files.

i cant believe i agree with something toxic would ever say but he is right, the new maps are awesome.
since my opinion counts more than most, except you exalted console, may i suggest several- 3 to 5 new maps per week or something like that and start them on a particular day. that way they are expected and anyone wanting them can run they game while they load and watch spongebob.

i think all the maps(new ones) that are there including those on hold should remain (active)

Update: A truce was reached tonight between a few members of xatrix, ending a lengthy feud.

For the moment, everyone appears to be friends again.

Hopefully it remains that way!


The map overrides are restored again.


As for the downloads, I definitely agree a xatrix related map pak would be nice.

I'm told jdolan has a utility to automatically create a pak file from a .bsp, containing all the textures/envs/sounds referenced by the map.

We'd want something like that, but to do that with all the xatrix maps.

Anyway....

Currently it is difficult for spawngirl to keep that zip file updated, so it may be missing the very latest few maps.  She has very low upload bandwidth. 

(I would like to work out a solution with an automated tool to construct that archive, but, ... need to code it...)

We now have HTTP downloads working for r1q2 users (and possibly other protocol 35 clients.)

Maps download much, much faster...
