Messages during Quake2 installation
« on: February 20, 2009, 03:48:53 PM »
Hello
I've always install Quake2 with success.....
.....but i have some questions about theses messages during the installation

First  message:
Please choose an install size by selecting either cd,normal or maximum.

CD:
The cd install requires 25 Mb of uncompressed hard disk space

Normal:
The normal install requires 225 Mb of uncompressed hard disk space

Maximum:
The maximum install requires 400 Mb of uncompressed hard disk space

What is the difference between : cd,normal or maximum ??? why so much difference between space size?

And after this message:
Second  message:

The following requirement(s) were not detected on your system .Click Help for more information on Quake2 's system requirement  or click Install to continue the installation

2X CDROM drive or better

Do you have a idea about this second one too?? ...it is because a have a DVD ROM ???

Thanks !!!  :grinelectric:

@+ et merci à tous !!

Based on the file sizes... I would guess that the Normal install installs the .pak files, and the Maximum install also installs the cinematic movie files.

I think Q2 is so old, that it doesn't recognize modern CDROM speeds.

Just ignore that message...

Hi Console
I think you're right !....i will choose "normal" for the futur....i don't need theses "cinema" scenes..
but i'm a little curious about "cd" hdd size.....i can't imagine  25 Mb of uncompressed hard disk space is enough to install Quake ?!....what do you think about it??

baseq2/pak0.pak is about 178 megs.  My guess is the "CD" install, leaves the .pak files on the CDROM.

Yeah, back when Quake2 came out, it was pretty typical for someone to have a hard disk size of about 9 gigs, like my old p3 500mhz machine that is now used as my music studio. I have so much old oddball software on there that isn't backed up on CD. I have about 500MB of free space on it right now, which will be gone by the time I get all the tracks for the new song I'm working on, plus the vocal tracks for the 3 or 4 newest ones. Back in those days, 9gigs was considered pretty large. These days, people have little MP3 players with a comparable amount of storage.

The "normal" will do just fine. The 3.20 update patch will allow you to play without the CD anyway.

If you have ANY CD-ROM drive, it will do. If you ever meet anyone who is still using a 1x CD drive, they probably use confederate money to buy groceries, or possibly wampum.

Keep in mind you don't even need the installation CD.

If you want to install Quake 2 on another computer you can just burn your whole Quake 2 folder, file for file to a CD and dump it on the other computer. Works well for installing Q2 to Vista... besides you won't have to install all your mods and such over again.
