In the end, I just simply kludged the forums code with special knowledge about "board number 15" and "board number 35".

I suppose they can announce themselves if they wish.  Here was a recent comment from someone on that topic:

It seems to me the entropy pool is a cesspool. It basically has to do with the "View the most recent posts" link. People have to read through 3 pages of entopy pool to find something of use.

i wouldn't mind of other forums filtered out certain sub-forums.  Good job on that idea.  (guess a better thing would be the option to choose which forums, by default, you search when doing a "recent posts" click, but eh.  this works too).

I'm once again trying to talk serious and from a position from experience. ( this never goes well)

Deleting problem posts just causes the problem person to recreate the thread and rehash his arguments which are then no longer available. It's similar to banning a user from the forums. He'll flame the shoutbox for a couple days (because admins tend to not remove access from that feature) and then he'll log on as his secondary troll account to make one last "this forum sucks" thread. The comparison is really that both actions will be considered equally harsh by the target user.

There may be a terminology mismatch here.  When I click the DELETE button, the post is moved to the forums recycle bin, which is the Reform School board.

(It takes a second DELETE from within Reform School to make the post vanish for good.)

A post has to be pretty vile for me to press DELETE twice.  It does happen occasionally, but not too often.

Nobody is trying to silence ideas here.  Often simply restating an idea with more apporopriate language is all that is necessary.  i truly believe that under the current rules as stated, any idea can be expressed.

Example A:

Person 1:  i state and believe that x=y.

Person 2: You stupid ignorant fucktwat, how could you think that.  You are obviously the spawn of a horse that was raped by a manbearpig.  You should stfu.

This example would likely be removed from the more moderated areas of the forums here.


Example B:

Person 1:  i state and believe that x=y.

Person 2:  Person 1, i disagree with your opinion for these stated reasons.  Reason 1, reason 2, and reason 3.

This would be perfectly acceptable, and allows complete freedom to let the poster express his thoughts, without any personal attacks.  It is simply not necessary to belittle people to get your point across clearly and efficiently.

I probably would have moved it eventually to /dev/random.  But the upload maps thread was practically spawngirl's second home at that point.  I didn't feel a pressing need to move it ASAP.

Dunno, but I think the admins have been pretty laid back over the years.  Women gamers, men gamers, dogs and cats alike have been flamed equally.  I think this was a case where a 1 page thread turned into pages of insanity.  It was probably a case of them having enough.  I can't think of a single q2 forum, where there has been this level of freedom, regarding speech.  Instead of being thankful it has been this open, seems odd that people are getting this worked up.  I don't think anything will change drastically and only time will tell.  At this point, I view it as, 'Hey we are watching now, continue about your business’....again time will tell. 

I thought the spawngirl thread was slightly funny.  No doubt jager was just having his own personal fun with the situation.  To each their own.  But where I thought it became off, is when jager and others were justifying the thread, by indicating he was defending himself from insults.  I mean come on, this was a person, unable to read english and responded in broken English – along with not understanding sarcasm.  I really don't think there was anything to defend.  It was entertainment.

That's your personal opinion, (iow: NOT in the rules) and to me it looks like you'd be trying to tell us all what points we can and cannot make and that we cannot show our disgust for how ignorant some people really are and how foolish their opinions are because some 3rd party might be offended.

This is the sort of disparity between what the rules SAY and how they will be implemented that I mentioned earlier in this thread. Because of it, it will eventually become apparent that we're all being held hostage by the moderator with the thinnest skin and the most time on their hands, and I sure hope someone is still around at that time to protest, who cares about how Tastyspleen.net was an island in the sea of lesser communities that were run by overbearing admins and that as a result had little or no visible activity from their members.

Given the evidence already posted to the contrary--we've received complaints, we've been pondering the noise issue on the forums for a long time, myself all the way back to what led to the creation of the Entropy Pool in the first place--I'm going to assume the above is merely an attempt at a troll post.  As already stated, the spawngirl thread was a threshold event. 

BTW, re: "thread that wasn't in the right place due to the admins not moving it to entropy based on its content".  I disagree with the premise that it is somehow OK that yet another thread became derailed with noise in the first place.  Based on its initial content, it should have been in /dev/random, not entropy. 


Somewhat ironically, when I went searching for one of Vibes goofy "whirly map boy" posts yesterday (or the day before?) what I landed in was yet another thread, from 2006, being derailed with noise, which culminates with members asking to please take the noise elsewhere.

Again, these thread derailments have been an item of concern to me for years, although as I've stated, I would have preferred a software-assisted solution, and as I've also stated I used to assign blame about 50/50 to the trolls and to those who responded to the trolls.  I don't quite split it 50/50 anymore.  But regardless of where the blame is assigned, my concern about the issue remains.

As to spawngirl in particular, as I stated on Friday I don't think I can be totally objective. I've enjoyed playing q2 with her for months and I like her as a person, regardless of the unprovability of gender.  This does not change my long standing concern about the trollish derailment of threads.

Actually I was dead serious. when this fiasco started reaching a head in the irc channel plenty of people who were arguing with jager denied that it was only happening right now because of the spawngirl situation. You proved this to be untrue with one of your posts earlier by stating that it really was the breaking point.

You're literally the first one I've seen who stated it plainly, and I assume that is because the others who know it, denied it vocally and don't want to be called on their lie, and unlike them you haven't put your foot in your mouth on that issue already.

In hindsight, I probably should not have said "you guys" and instead pointed out your comment for certain individuals, to be sure that you understood that YOU were not really the target of that comment, but rather the force that made them have to "man up" and stop their denials.

I might be misunderstanding you but afaik, there has been a software solution for this in-place for quite a long time:
It's the delete button that shows up for a thread author. If they don't use it, then how can you place more than half the blame on the people who are being off-topic?

On top of that, there was already a moderator working the public sections of the forum...



BTW, I mentioned the thread being out of place because of all the blame being thrown around and hitting certain people in an unfair amount, not because I thought it being flamed out was acceptable (it was kinda lame imo).

Where's the blame for the public boards mod who was supposed to be on top of things and keep that shit civil in the maps board?
