Potentially, yes. That's not my problem with it though. I think it's a redundant redundancy. I also think it's a reverse of my suggestion to make entropy (and smack talk) opt in boards, which I've historically seen work.

...That and I assume that I'll be the first member to be graced with that user-setting for putting my foot in my mouth again at some point.

Keeping threads on topic is all fine and dandy.

Trying to excise the integral part of playing FPS games that we call "smack talk" from all parts but the trashcan of a community based on an FPS game is what's wrong with that.


Some threads deserve to be flamed out. I don't expect everyone to understand that tho, and conform to my beliefs.

Apparently I'm not the kind of person who feels they need to call mommy to push their skewed set of beliefs on others.
Instead of trying to complain to some higher authority and by extension feel that I used some power to get my way, I've learned to just talk it out and let people have their own thoughts about it.

I hope you guys realize that now that you've decided to regulate people's ability to argue to this degree, you will be called upon incessantly to illuminate exactly what those regulations entail and you will be expected to constantly develop new ones for every situation that is slightly unclear.

Indeed, similar concerns have also been expressed amongst the moderators themselves.

As it happens, for the most part, the iron-fisted draconian rules listed above pretty closely mirror the ad hoc approach to forum moderation I've taken up till now, anyway.

But yes, I agree as written, there's room for other moderators to interpret the rules more stringently.

Currently I'm taking a wait-and-see approach.  "It’s hard to make predictions, especially about the future."

Frankly my preference would be for a more software-assisted solution.  Perhaps similar to youtube where a comment can be up-/down-voted and if it gets enough down votes it is hidden by default.  (Or like slashdot with its moderator point system, whatever.)

But I find the forum source code to be ugly enough that it is tortuous to contemplate hacking significant features into it.

So for now, as Dick Cheney observed, "as you know, ah, you go to war with the forums you have--not the forums you might want or wish to have at a later time."

The forums provides the ability to split threads, at least...  But so far the replies here have seemed mostly on-topic.

My only disagreement is the need for shortbus 2.0.

I dunno if it will be useful.  It's actually stricter than ShortBus as far as posting goes.  But less strict in that it doesn't inhibit changing one's profile.  The idea was that it could be used as sort of a "temp mute"...

Actually I'd honestly like to see what they consider 'Smack Talk'... If you get into a disagreement with somebody on a topic, that's 'Smack Talk'? The new rules are very vague and I'm sure they are for a reason.

Speaking for myself, an example I felt crossed the line was when spawngirl was referred to as, "this slime".

Although the thread was already in the crapper anyway, judging from the timestamp on the "MOVED" post, the following was the trigger that got the thread moved to Entropy Pool.  (Another moderator, probably fanny, beat me to it.)

Thanks quadz (seriously), and also thanks for letting me know you were actually coding the button and actively working on some changes with the other Mods (=P). Last thing I heard from you about creating a seperate link was "almost every admin agreed the forums had gotten out of hand" and "I like the idea... and it's certainly technically possible".

It may be simpler to interpret my comment as: An example I felt crossed the line was the post in which spawngirl was referred to as, "this slime".

As to the slime comment in particular, it bothers me for a few reasons, not the least of which is the sort of drive-by way in which it was used, effectively referring to a third party as a worthelss human being.
