My grandfather was in the navy, he died from meso/asbestos.

My dad's old man did several jobs during Korea, but he was a mostly a mechanic in the Navy. I'd assume he would've been exposed to asbestos at some point, but he ended up dying of a massive heart attack in his mid to late 50's I think.

I did some retrofit jobs when I worked as a pipefitter. I think I was only ever on one job where asbestos might've been present, and I made DAMN SURE I stayed as far away from that shit as I could. I was a pretty heavy smoker for a tad over 10 years, and I still smoke a good bit today although not nearly as heavy as I used to. I also dip snuff on the regular and occasionally chew loose leaf tobacco. So I've already got enough cancer risk in my daily routine. Don't need that shit. In fact back before Christmas, I was helping a neighbor run some copper pipe for a new bathroom he was putting in. He really had no idea how to sweat copper or run the pipe, so I gave him a hand. He had a plank of damn asbestos insulation he was trying to get me to use so I wouldn't burn any of the wood framing with the torch. Dude was touching it with bare hands and trying to hand it to me. I was like, "Uh.... no thanks." :-\

Wow, what a breath of fresh air after watching last week's Young Earth Creationist debate: Lawrence Krauss and a panel of physics badasses--several of whom contributed to major discoveries in the past 40 years--discuss today's top physics problems, and to what degree it's currently reasonable to expect a multiverse to exist, and how we've experimentally verified our theories to date:

It was a good video, rather open-minded(religous folk who acknowledge science yet perhaps believe in a "first mover" would enjoy this even.) It also isn't dependent on the big bang, which is very cool. The CMB is the greatest evidence for the big bang, and that isn't QUITE enough for me. Of course it's good for the supporting argument, but I'd lean on the universe simply swelling and contracting without some massive explosion. Yeah, the CMB hints towards that and yeah, E=MC^2 obviously shows the proportionality of the speed of light with mass(very, very small mass creating very, very large explosion via the laws of physics... hence the CMB), but for some reason my gut feels like we're going to come up with a better explanation one of these days.

Wonder if this will turn out to be something remarkable? Hopefully it's not something more ordinary that's being over-hyped. But anyway:

I think it's probably going to be about detecting something or other during their search for a gravitational signature of the big bang that gives us a better look past the microwave background radiation from the time of the expansion of the universe.

Nice call, Señor Dervish!

Quote from: Lawrence Krauss
http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/elements/2014/03/a-scientific-breakthrough-lets-us-see-to-the-beginning-of-time.html

[excerpt]

This observation, made possible by the fact that gravitational waves can travel unimpeded through the universe, takes us to 10-35 seconds after the Big Bang. By comparison, the Cosmic Microwave Background—which, until today, was the earliest direct signal we had of the Big Bang—was created when the universe was already three hundred thousand years old.

If the discovery announced this morning holds up, it will allow us to peer back to the very beginning of time—a million billion billion billion billion billion times closer to the Big Bang than any previous direct observation—and will allow us to explore the fundamental forces of nature on a scale ten thousand billion times smaller than can be probed at the Large Hadron Collider, the world’s largest particle accelerator. Moreover, it will allow us to test some of the most ambitious theoretical speculations about the origin of our observed universe that have ever been made by humans—speculations that may first appear to verge on metaphysics. It might seem like an esoteric finding, so far removed from everyday life as to be of almost no interest. But, if confirmed, it will have increased our empirical window on the origins of the universe by a margin comparable to the amount it has grown in all of the rest of human history. Where this may lead, no one knows, but it should be cause for great excitement.

Huzzaaaa! We know more than we did yesterday!

Chances are they wouldn't have made a big announcement if it would crumble under peer review so we can kinda count this as the most recent "proof" of the current model of the history of the universe.
At the very least it looks like it's going to help us narrow down the number of possible theoretical models drastically.

Yeah, but will it help anyone get better gas mileage?

Meh. It's fiddlesticks. You lab coat wearing muhfuckas should use those big brains of yours and all the funding you're getting to go find me something "useful". Who gives a shit when the universe BEGAN if none us are probably gonna be here to enjoy it for much longer when we turn the earth into one giant smogged up sinkhole from all the petroleum we're sucking out of it and lighting on fire.

Lawrence Krauss gives additional detail on the significance of the discovery, while cautioning that we need to reproduce the result in other experiments to be sure:

lately I've been re-reading Lawrence Krauss' book "A Universe from Nothing" that expands of some of the concepts he did so many lectures about then I ran into a cool news story that ties in nicely with it.

It was about a new computer simulation of the universe formation thru present day including both baryons and dark energy/matter influences and all manner of fluid dynamic considerations and the effects of black holes etc.. It really seems like they tried their best to include every major contributing factor and the results so far closely mirror the universe we see in our telescopes (a good sign with any scientific simulation)

I don't think I've ever seen one that was this detailed, and which so nicely shows the something among all the nothing and how it interacts.

They have some high res stills and videos available here, that are just mesmerizing

I don't worship the devil. Jesus is Lord, friend. He died for your sins. He will forgive you if you just ask.
