good aliases?
« on: August 29, 2005, 03:08:58 PM »
heyas

im always looking for ways to get better at quake2
i was hoping some of the top players here could show me a few good binds
im looking for a walking bind thats slows me enough so people cant hear me
then when i press the button again it changes back to full run

other thing id like to get is a good set of team binds
somethign basic so i can understand what they do and how to bind them :)

anything else that might help as far as setting up a good config is also welcome

Start with the most obvious solutions and then make them more complicated is what they say I think......

You know you can just hit Shift to walk, or bind a specific key to walk right?  But it would not give you a toggle on/off switch like you appear to be requesting.

I've been playing this game for 6 years now, and I still don't know how to do aliases.  I guess if I cared I'd learn, but I don't I suppose =)  I probably should, might allow me to come up with some handy things to help me out, zooms, etc.

I think you want some basic binds (not team binds).

Here are some simple ones.  You can put these in a quake2/baseq2/autoexec.cfg

//Clean-up weapon switch for when the enemy is <25 health.  You can expand this with the machine gun and shotgun too.
Code: [Select]
bind w "use super shotgun;wait;use chaingun"
//Powerups
Code: [Select]
bind a "use invulnerability; use quad damage; use power shield; use silencer; use rebreather; use environment suit; use power screen"
//And I have my mousewheel up as rail and mousewheel down as RL.  I don't find the mouse wheel to be reliable enough to cycle through weapons.  Whatever it is, it has to be comfortable for you.
Code: [Select]
bind MWHEELDOWN "use rocket launcher"
bind MWHEELUP "use railgun"

The binds thread has good info for team binds, demo recording, and settings for the Q2A client at www.q2players.org.

those work :) i added to them tho a bit

reason im askign for walking/team binds is im finding myself in situations now where they are needed
and i dotn have any to use :(

EDIT: i foudn what i was looking for

Code: [Select]
alias walkon "set storefwd $cl_forwardspeed;set cl_forwardspeed 100;bind TAB walkoff;echo Stealth Mode"
alias walkoff "set cl_forwardspeed $storefwd;bind TAB walkon;echo Normal Mode"
bind TAB "walkon"

i was hoping someone had some real basic and compact team binds, i want to able to bind them all to my keypad if possible
this isnt including weap/item drops, but that would be nice too. something even n00best of n00bs could learn and use

I find the binds from the other thread that use the variables to be the easiest to actually use in game, just harder to configure without some help if you dont understand how they work.

Basically you create toggle keys that once pressed cycle your keys to a new set of binds.  For expample every key I use to USE a weapon is the same key i use to drop that weapon.  Here is part of my config that pretty much explains how they work and you can create endless sets of binds from this once you get the idea how it works.

/MODIFIER KEYS THESE ARE THE KEYS YOU USE TO CHANGE 3 SETS OF BINDS

set modifier1 "0"

bind MOUSE2 "set modifier1 0"
bind MOUSE4 "set modifier1 1"
bind Mouse5 "set modifier1 2"

So here I have bound mouse2 to give me my default binds(modifier1 0), like mwheelup is my use rocket launcher, mwheel down use chaingun, ect... the basic key layout.

Next is mouse4 set to modifier1 1, now all my key binds can have a new bind after its pressed which i use to drop the weapon and some ammo rather than use that weapon.  My 3rd modifier bound to mouse5 I only have a few binds set, and have plenty of room to add stuff if i ever think of anything i need.

The reason this is so great is you can fit everything you need within easy reach, basically keep all the same 8 or so binds you may use now on a regular basis and triple the amount of function you get out of them.  I cant stress how much easier this is then having keys bound all over the keyboard when in fast paced action trying to do stuff.

So here is what a few of my key binds look like so they can hold 3 different binds per key.

lias RL "RL_$modifier1"
alias "RL_0" "use rocket launcher"
alias "RL_1" "drop rocket launcher; say_team $blu DROPPED RL @ $loc_here [;drop rockets"
alias "RL_2" "drop rockets; wave 1"

alias CG "CG_$modifier1"
alias "CG_0" "use machinegun; use chaingun"
alias "CG_1" "drop chaingun; drop machinegun; say_team $blu DROPPED CG/MG ] $loc_here [;drop bullets"
alias "CG_2" "drop bullets; wave 1"

Now dont get confused because of the alias's, these are my use rocket launcher and use chaingun binds and also makes the same keys (in this case not really keys my mouse wheel) able to drop these weapons.  The alias must be first defined as a modifier (alias CG "CG_$modifier1"), now alias CG can be toggled between CG_0, CG_1, CG_2 by using the modifier keys i bound above in the first examlple form my config. Each with a seperate meaning.  I know it may seem like alot at first but its really quite simple, and acutally a whole lot easier to use in game once setup then getting new keys all over the place.  Its much easier to find the drop chain gun key when its already a common key for you to use chaingun.  Hope this makes sense and I would be glad to help if I can.

// [Run - Walk]

alias run "cl_run 1;alias run-walk walk;echo Running"
alias walk "cl_run 0;alias run-walk run;echo Walking"
alias run-walk walk
bind ctrl run-walk

That alias will make you walk when pressing ctrl, then you'll be walking till you press ctrl again.

If you just want to hold the key down while walking, and running when not holding it down, just "bind key +speed"

daelmun's so so good teambinds
I made my own config more or less from scratch, and been changing it over and over for some time. Just minor fixes to make it adopt to each client without requiring different teambind setup (as r1q2 and q2a seemed to dislike my initial nocheat config, then q2a wouldn accept long aliases (fixed in the latest release) and r1q2 had some weird stuff that I dunno what was all about). Now my teambinds works equally good in nocheat/q2a/r1q2 at least.

But the downside is that the config is really hard for others to change around to fit their own needs, especially the teambinds system I've made.

The dropleft/dropright/weapleft/weapright is just keys to the left and right of my movement keys, as q2a crashed when using long aliases. The way I solved it was to divide it into two shorter parts. Now it is not needed anymore, but since it works just as good this way I'd decided to keep it. For instance now I would just combine dropleft and dropright: alias drop "bind w drop-rg; bind a drop-rl; bind q drop-ssg". NB: notice I already here decide what keys I use for each weapon.

alias dropleft "bind w drop-rg; bind a drop-rl; bind q drop-ssg; bind r drop-cg; bind g drop-gl; bind v drop-bfg"
alias dropright "bind r drop-cg; bind g drop-gl; bind v drop-bfg"
alias weapleft "bind w rg; bind a rl; bind q ssg"
alias weapright "bind r cg; bind g gl; bind v bfg"

^ Those aliases are to switch between being in weapondrop mode, and weapon use mode. Meaning if I hit the rocketlauncher key (mine is a) I switch to rocketlauncher normally, but if the drop-mode is enabled (for me: when holding down the mouse3 button) I drop the weapon instead. Makes weapondropping a lot easier

alias +toggle-mouse3 "dropleft; dropright; set modifier1 1"
alias -toggle-mouse3 "weapleft; weapright; set modifier1 0"

alias +set_space "set modifier2 2;+movedown"
alias -set_space "set modifier2 0;-movedown"

^ Those first couple aliases are toggeling between weapon-use mode and weapon-drop mode for my weaponkeys. I use the mouse3 button to do this, while holding it down, I will drop the weapon when hitting the key, when releasing it I will use it. The modifier part of the alias is only there to toggle the ammodropping on my mousewheel, which is what the 2 last aliases do as well. Cause if I duck while using the mousewheel to drop ammo, I drop different ammo than I do when not ducking

set $arw "%??????%"
set modifier2 "0"
set modifier1 "0"

^I still use $modifer1 and $modifier2 to make it easier to write my ammodropping binds on the mousewheel as they are sorta complicated still, and the $arw is there to put fancy colors in my drop binds (only seen with the right concars.pcx. I set the values to 0 to give them values, else I'd need to hit either of the keys that change the value of the modifier1 and modifier2 variable in order to make the binds work. Or something like that.

bind mouse3 +toggle-mouse3
bind space +set_space
bind a rl
bind w rg
bind q ssg
bind r cg
bind g gl
bind v bfg
bind x use grenades
bind MWHEELUP rox
bind MWHEELDOWN bullets

^ This is where I bind the aliases to keys. Notice that these keys are also in the aliases inside the mouse3 bind, so in order to change the keys you can't just change them here. But I'll come back to that later. The space is a normal ducking key, which also change what I drop when using the mousewheel. I'll come back to that later.

The weapon use and weapon drop aliases:

Now this is where I decide what for instance rl and drop-rl from the first part of my config really means. What you need to notice when reading these binds is the fact that I also binds the exact key to use for each weapon in the dropping alias! Now in order to change what keys to use for rocketlauncher, you need to change it inside the first "dropleft" alias (alias dropleft "bind w drop-rg; bind a drop-rl; bind q drop-ssg; bind r drop-cg; bind g drop-gl; bind v drop-bfg"), in the binding of the keys ("bind a rl") and inside the drop-rl alias ("alias drop-rl "drop rocket launcher; drop rockets; wave 1;

Oh, and to set up a good config make it easy for yourself to understand. Copying other's config is good and all untill you want to change some things here and there. Try to understand the config you are using, not neccessarily write it from scratch, but don't put in stuff you have no idea what is.

And devide it in sections:

//PLAYER
set name xxx
set skin xxx
set fov xxx
set
set

//MOVEMENT
bind
bind
bind

//MENUS
bind
bind
bind

//GRAPHIC SETTINGS
set
set
set

//SOUND SETTINGS
set
set
set

//TIMERS
bind
bind

//LOCATIONBINDS
bind
bind

And so on, the config that q2 makes is so ugly for others to read. At least keep it as clean as possible. I used to bind the same key several times in my old config, just adding new stuff as I found a better way. Try to delete stuff you don't want instead of overwriting it later in the config. Maybe use the // in front of single lines you may want to toggle on/off later depending so you don't forget about it, but if you haven't toggled it on/off in half a year just delete it for good.

Remove useless binds from singleplayer, make sure all the keys you use often are easy to reach. Try to use the teambinds often so you don't forget about where they are. At times hitting the wrong bind is worse than not hitting a bind at all!! Learn to use them.

Maybe use an autoexec.cfg to keep order in your configs:

my autoexec.cfg:

exec binds.cfg <- my binds
exec settings.cfg <- my settings
exec q2adv1.cfg <- my q2a binds
exec set.cfg <- my colors for teambinds
//exec r1q2.cfg <- my r1q2 config, currently disabled
//exec nocheat.cfg <- my nocheat.cfg, disabled (for good)

And on a final note, use the teambinds with care in 4v4s!! Don't spam useless information (your location/health status isn't needed all the time, just let the team know when you're in position and when you lose it, don't spam it). You can't drop too much ammo, and everyone wants a good teammate that doesn't hog items and doesn't give anything away, but does the opposite :P

there just to confusing for me :) but i understand them a litle better now that people have shown me

i just dont play enough team games to really build myself a team cfg. to complicated
i think i was just looking for an already built one that i could set the binds up easily

Haha, sorry xtife :) You caught me being bored and just had to do something, meaning writing looong posts. And yeah, I certainly understand what you mean, reading my config is a pain in the ass, but I've written it all by myself so at least I know what it does :P

Anyway, think playing tdm is more fun once you get a decent config that makes it easy to drop weapons and give locations. Then you can start getting frustrated at the railwhoring and spawnraping and poor teammates and stacked teams and suspicious wallshots and lucky spam and general shittalking and whining teammates and opponents and stuff, I mean the stuff that makes teams fun :P :P :P

I don't worship the devil. Jesus is Lord, friend. He died for your sins. He will forgive you if you just ask.
