peewee, when they hype the game for a year based on it's "amazing graphics" and they used those same "amazing graphics" as a half assed excuse to do away with integral parts of fallout's gameplay, then I think I should be able to expect "amazing graphics" from the game.
They aren't amazing. They're the same 5 year old shit they've been peddling since morrowind because they're incapable of figuring out something newer.
The only reason they needed huge draw distance, is that they made the game a FPS/3PP shooter because they aren't capable of making anything other than an semi-decent FPP/3PP A-RPG (by their own admission) and they had to have something to bring to the table that made the game look epic. (the quests won't help there..)
An isometric view which would have been true to the gameplay of the series, does not ever show you the sky or the horizon and needs no huge draw distance, because it is not required for the type of game that Fallout 3 shoudl have been. (at this point I'd preempt an "OMG isometric is old fashioned!!1" reply with evidence that FPP RPGS came first and are not inherently more immersive or enjoyable, but I'm short on time)
Diablo 3 isn't magically going to be a first person shooter just because those games sell like hotcakes, and there was no reason for Fallout 3 to be one other than the lack of balls, expertise, and imagination from Bethesda. They try to lay it off on current market trends which allow some asshole who counts dollars and who's never played a video game to decide the future of video games for the people who play them, but this is why they've made sub par games since Daggerfall. They aren't willing to take a risk by doing something different.
Essentially, Fallout 3 was ruined for me and plenty of Fallout fans so Bethesda could be lazy, rehash the same old shit, and push 4 million+ copies to xbox kiddies for 60 bucks a pop (or more for the snazzy lunchbox and pipboy clock!)
Sales don't define a good game, and in this case, the opportunity to make a few more sales caused the rape of an established franchise that can be found in every top 100 video games list since '97.
If people are fucking stupid and will buy shit like Jimmy Dean's Chocolate Chip Pancakes wrapped around Sausage on a stick, it does not make those crappy products superior to a balanced breakfast.
BTW, this is how convincing the NPC animations could have been in Fallout 3, if Bethesda wasn't a company built on laziness and incompetence and who expected their fans to fix their fuckups.

Diablo 3 is going to sell because it's got the name "blizzard" on the cover. 'nuf said. I highly doubt fallout 3 sold because of it's legacy, like you said, most went to console's. Fallout 3 sold well because it's a fun game. Doesn't have to be great. Heck, doesn't even have to be fun to sell, look at half life 2! Boring, bad graphics, no story and STILL sold more then any other game in the past 6 years (sold for the same reason diablo 3 will).
Fallout 3 is just like stalker with more RPG stuff added in. How come nobody else get that before buying it? I didn't even read reviews for the thing! Didn't even watch promo videos, I asked people "is it like stalker?" "yeah, but more rpg stuff & a little less action". Sold.
Just from your post I'd say it was a big risk: they pissed off a few "hardcore" people. Solution: don't buy a game from them in this series again, or until you can try it first. I don't buy Valve games anymore, I'm not planning on buying Rage any time soon. Because those companies did really crappy jobs in games since the late 90's. I hated morrowwind. I didn't buy oblivion.

They didn't just piss of a few hardcore RPG fans..
They pissed off some of every group that it was trying to pander to, even some of those who wanted a mindless shooter and had seen it shown as such. The only group that seems consistently happy is the Oblivion fanboy crowd who would buy shit in a box from bethesda with a big smile on their faces.
Look at focalor here, and imagine that he'd actually spent money to get this game.
Fallout 3 was advertised as an RPG and a Shooter and as a sequel to Fallout.
It was named Fallout 3 so that it would be grouped with RPGs when it came time to compare its outdated look to games like GOW2 that also came out this year. Zenimax pretty much bought the multimillion dollar IP just so they could market the game using established imagery and it's very good word of mouth, and give Bethesda a premise to make into a cost effective Oblivion mod with guns that wouldn't have to look as amazing as the newer gen shooter games do.
then, instead of a demo to show off it's rpg elements and how great its quests are to the RPG players, they released some canned footage from E3 which was almost 100% ranged combat. They did the same in every hands-on preview by only allowing the previewers access to certain areas of the game, leading them to pretty much be previews consisting of 90% combat.
I caught the commercial for it on spike tv the other day.. It's a bit of the atmospheric teaser trailer with combat jarringly spliced over it.
They repeatedly mentioned it (by "They" I refer to Pete Hines: head of Bethesda PR, and Todd Howard: Douchebag in charge of raping established franchises) as being a hybrid shooter like Stalker, and then in the next breath as a huge groundbreaking "true RPG" game, and then more along the lines of a mindless shooter with the whole "Violence is fucking funny!" angle from Mr. Howard in most of the PR videos.
I won't even bother rehashing how poorly it represents Fallout.
It actually does all of those things so poorly that it should be in it's own genre:
Inconsistent Sandbox Shooter Games with Minimal Role Playing Elements and Realtime with Pause.
Unfortunately, that would make a stupidly huge and tough to remember acronym.
