I see what you mean by sniping you in mid air inhuman, however that only happens to me usually when I mess about and for example, throw myself off the elevator on q2dm1, if you strafe jump extremely quick round a map, jump over obstacles, quickly double jumping things, I find I didnt get railed half as much last night when comparing to the way I saw some playing, the barely jumping and certainly not strafe jumping, just walking about and strafing left to right, sure their aim totally owned mine, but I think if you have great aim, and brilliant movement like that, they compliment eachother very well, unfortuanately my aim sucks, and my movement isnt really upto scratch! I just know basic jumps like the edge jumps that people make in tdm like second nature.

Here are some tips:

Use sounds to the max, play with max performance rather than max compatibility, use headphones, to help you learn where players are spawning.

Stay on higher ground, chances are higher that you'll frag rather than get fragged. The players at the bottom have very little chance railing you from below than you can from above.

Always keep moving, never stand still. When your in the open 1on1, never try to jump and always try to move unpredictably.

Aim the crosshair where you think they will move, and when they come inline, fire.

Try not to jump from above to below (like jumping from lift on dm1 to lower arena) cuz theres a chance you'll get railed in midair.

If it helps, grab the purri pak, the sounds will help you more than the default Q2 ones, specially the spawns.

Practice, Practice Practice. The more you practice the better you become.  Play on Tastyspleen FFA rails server (tastyspleen.net:27911) often, when you don't find it challenging enough you can try your luck over at the TastyRailgun server. (q2.tastyrailgun.com)
