What gator means is that circle/strafing will make you jump farther, not higher
. Also there is hardly a difference between circling and strafing. Circling is an addon to strafing which makes you go even farther.

Just as a follow-up...
I stopped using the bind I posted because it turned out to be not very consistent.
So far by relaxing instead of spazzing very tensely
the tendinitis seems to be held at bay.
I'm looking forward to actually completing souljumps on "hard". (Just the right level of challenge for my current n00b level.)

using jump aliases seems pretty weak to me. i wouldnt imagine that theyd be legal in governed competitions, but what do i know. circle jumping is turning (a smoother turn gives a better result) in an arc. strafe jumping involves sideways movements (which can act like a turn). double jumping (or bunnyhopping) is jumping in the air and hitting jump before u hit the next object (be it the ground, a box or whatever) and allows u to jump at the earliest possible moment. all of these can make u go farther or faster by themselves. combine all these elements and u can jump farthest and move fastest. this is why some people haul ass versus go slow. changingcl_maxfps makes certain maneuvers easier - like a 31 fps makes ladder jumps easier for example.

I think human error is supposed to be a big factor in Quake 2, mis-clicking your jump button, in a hurry, is something that should happen. Like when you're in mega room, and the heat is on, and you're trying to jump to double jump on top of the ammo pack box, to jump over to mega, that should be something you will miss from time to time, specially when pressured. Using a bind that does it for you sorta makes that negligible.
