Easier said than done? That's my job... I manage a meager 12 on my own...

With ESX technology it only makes it easier... 

managing 12 servers is a bit different than managing the google architecture.  of course when you break it down piece by piece it's not as difficult, but hindsight is 20/20.

google is one of the greatest marvels of engineering ever, how it is somehow not difficult to implement and manage because they have thousands of employees is beyond me.

I understand servers, currently myself and a few others just finished the automation of VPS's, get your virtual server automatically through the web, then via the web you can scale (add memory, processor, etc).  Yes you save hardware costs, and possibly have less servers to manage, but there is definitely more complexity.  not to mention running the server means running the application, and possibly the network.
