as stupid as it sounds, imho that's why d3/q4 fell flat MP: no personality.

Exactly.
And one time I tried altering the sounds of a model because having wacky soundpacks was an aspect of quake 2 I loved. Not only was it a pain in the ass to burrow into the PAK file,once I managed a switch,Quake 3 accused me of cheating and wouldn't let me connect to any servers.
And there were great models being made too for it,none of which you could use online because every server was running pure,so it ultimately defeated itself. Only mapping was faily innovative: the guy called Ente wasone I admired,who did some very cool custom work for PC Gamer back in the day...and now hasa standalone Q3 engine game called World of Padman

One thing I missed during the Q3 years was homegrown single player experiences that Quake 2 nd HalfLife had in spades...not having a single player aspect to Quake 3 forced modders to turn to other Q3engine games,and they were 90% WorldWar 2 games. I will always wonder at what modders could have done with the Alice game...a single player mod for FAKK2 was struggling along,but I suppose it was long abandoned.
And now I hear id's next game will have NO mod support whatsoever ...Rage. Kinda how I feel about that...

I see the trend in the gaming industry to milk the game in the aftermarket by charging fees for commercial placement in the games, fees for hosting servers, fees for patches and updates, fees for mod packs. The days of tossing out a game and watching people use it are past, now they have to control the brand and flavor of the game and there is no room for 3rd party mods or ideas about what the game should be. They need to maximize profits and revenue. Sad, really.

Heh, small ancedote: Call of Duty 4 has to be *modded* in order to get custom maps to load. CoD4 is still largely the q3 engine, and we all know the q3 engine is really plug-n-play with custom maps and other content. Something must have been deliberately changed in the q3 code in order to prevent custom maps. Chew on that one.

i'm sure it's not hard: q3a demo didn't allow custom content & I don't think some other Q3A games had custom content. Many times it's because the dev's make something special in the compiling (new collision file, special scripts, etc) that are needed & nobody figured out how to get them to work yet.

Well, i replace my original null.pcx with the grunt.pcx and renamed him to null.pcx. Now i can see everybody that are using null model like male/grunt! A simple mode to fix it!
