Quake Single Play
« on: March 07, 2008, 05:53:28 PM »
Yes, I still play single play. Or Co-op if anyone's around. I've downloaded a few of the old ones like Back at the Front, Satyr and 1492. For sheer volume of kills, "1492" has literally thousands. I think there's around 7 levels (haven't finished it yet). But this screenshot gives you an idea of the insanity of it. Check the number of kills you have ahead of you. What happens is you find your button somewhere, press it and a wall opens and here comes 20 guys at you. The game has crashed 3 times because its just too much for Quake to handle I guess.

2 things...

Marine Coop is fun (head shots and other "realism" similar to actionq2)
24.239.118.169:27912
(commands are punch and class. Also features the stomping damage code)

My unfinished set of single player maps.

Great site because it has ratings to help someone pick 5 really good single player maps.  I downloaded and played spogsp (http://www.viceman.us/3DGamersEdge/spq2lvlrevs/spog.html), classic!

Spogsp is good if you can survive the first 3 minutes. Its brutal. Other people will know it as the "Hub" map. Its the first of a series of maps.

In our baseq2 on the server, we have spogsp1.bsp, and hub.bsp ... both large single player maps, but by different authors...(?)

I have tried them all from
"Hell is only for heroes" to
"Paximperia" to "1492"

Pretty big maps but a bit buggy
when its too much monsters.  8)

Overall, the single player experience in q2 has been left on the side of the road in favor of the multiplayer experience. There are obvious reasons for this, but I still find it a bit of a pity - especially when there are some real gems out there. Q2 has a great monster set (if a tad slow), and great potential for huge enemy numbers (such as displayed in pax imperia). However, since some of the bugs that cause such large numbers to crash the game have not been addressed, the desire to delve into single player has pretty much died off. Since I'm not a programmer, all I can do is complain :P It would be cool, however, to see some efforts at making single player q2 a bug-free and seamlesss experience.

Personally I am still waiting on the single player rennaisance I was hoping for since the Quake 3 engine came out. I can only imagine what sort of homebrewed single player things could have been done with an SDK from American McGee's Alice in the hands of a proven talent like Ente, who did all those DM levels for PCGamer and for Padman. I even posted on American's website about why there was never an SDK for Alice, and he said Electronic Arts had no desire to p0romote Alice at all...

There is some things amatuers can do that a paid pro cannot:experiment and explore with a set of resources without the fear of real deadlines. Unfortunately, the majority of games the Q3 engine was used on were a dozen bad World war Two games...all more or less alike. The Quake 1 single player scene is still going on,and I guess Half Life 2 is too....too bad modern games are so complex todeal with now...

Star Trek Elite Force has a very great single player.
