you could mod the client to add in that function I think..

There is an engine mod called kmq2 that has support for ridiculously large maps and long drawdistance, but I don't know where you'd find a working version these days..

in quake2 "gl_zfar" might fix this
though it only works with OpenGL

I can't really remember, but I think Unreal 1 was software rendering ONLY. I think Unreal 2 only had 3Daccelerated rendering with a requirement of over 8mb for the video card, which is probably why I never played it on my old system. So I'd assume that Unreal 3 would be 3Daccelerated only as well. I could be wrong though.

unreal1 has d3d rendering and software, and possibly opengl too?
i think someone released an opengl patch for it anyways

Unreal 1 was compitable with 3Dfx so
u couldnt just use software mode to
those who didnt know that.

Probably right. I remember there a few games that were 3Dfx only, like one called Pandemonium. Not sure what kind of game it was, but the cover art featured some chick with large ta-ta's in a tight shirt.
