I survived Irma 

I got power back late yesterday and cable/internet back this afternoon, still on a boil water alert.

I made it through the storm pretty well, my house lost a little soffit and there are a lot of trees down in my area.

I live in a semi-rural area with many long wooded driveways.  The whole neighborhood worked together to clear the roads/driveways.
It was nice to see everyone come together and get everyone clear on the first day after. 

I have impact windows (no boarding up) so I was able to watch transformer after transformer pop as the night went on.  We got more from Irma than I was expecting.  We probably got 80-90 winds, with gust around 100.  Some of the squall lines were moving up to 90 mph.  There were many Tornadoes warnings with a few of them making it to the ground.  It made for a long night (these storms seem to always hit at night)

We got lots of wind up here near Athens GA, nothing like 80mph though. Probably 50 or better at times. Lots of neighbors had trees and limbs down. None at my house though... from THIS storm. I've STILL got oaks down from ice storms 2 or 3 winters ago, lol. I did lose a few shingles though. Virtually everyone in my neighborhood had their roofs redone for free in the last 3 years because of a bad shingle recall. I wasn't lucky enough to have those shingles so I've been dreading paying for a new roof. Perhaps this storm will get it done. I have a 1k deductible, but thats way better than... whatever the fuck it would cost. I already shelled 10k this Spring for a whole new AC system and furnace. That shit hurt. I need this roof shit to go my way. Got other MAJOR things that need attention, like paint, my back porch is about ready to collapse, the entire back end of my septic system needs replacing because the drain dome collapsed... and thats gonna require ripping out a section of driveway and probably part of the rear sprinkler system. A fucking NIGHTMARE.

But at least I still have a house I guess. For now.

Adjuster quoted me about 500 to repair the damaged ones. Motherfuckers. Maybe I can talk the roof guy into convincing the insurance co to do the whole thing. Fuckin bullshit. In the past 10 years, I've paid these cocksuckers 8 times what a new roof would cost, and I never called for frivolous bullshit. When these huge oaks fell a few years ago, I dealt with it MYSELF using caveman tools like a bowsaw and an axe and burning everything. The one fucking time I call them for help, they do more to fuck me than help me, cuz the new shingles won't even fucking match the old ones. Like I needed MORE shit to make my house look shittier. Thanks, you fuckin jew. It'd be better off leaving it.

If I ever do win the lottery, I'm gonna start my own insurance co and only write people IN the insurance biz... and I'm never gonna pay their claims or give a fuck if they live or die or get raped by reesus monkeys. And when they leave me for another co, I'll buy that new co and keep fucking them. At Xmas every year I'll send them a Xmas card thanking them for their business.

Oh yeah, it gets better.

Fuckin insurance dickhead quotes me 500 bucks for repairs when I have a 1k deductible, right? Roofing dickhead comes by and says "Oh yeah, we can repair it for that amount or less, but you get no kind of warranty at all. And lifting up the existing shingles to patch the area could damage those shingles. So if there's a leak after the repair, that's all on you, baby."

So now I'm FORCED into a position where I HAVE to pay to replace my entire fucking roof in order to protect myself. Because if they merely repair the spots that are missing shingles and it results in leaks, my insurance will cover ZERO of the damages from it, and I'll be left having to pay 100% of that too. So replacing the whole roof is gonna run me in the ball park of 15 grand.

Needless to say... I'm getting a new god damn motherfucking insurance company. And this dude that lives around the corner from me who sold me on this fucking bullshit policy with this bullshit company is likely gonna be catching a fucking punch in the mouth next time I see him. I don't even care if I end up in fucking jail.

I know a few people who had to deal with their insurance companies after Hurricane Matthew last year, the insurance companies tried to screw over everyone of them.  Insurance is all about collecting the most money they can and paying out the least 
 
Now after Harvey & Irma, it is going to happen all over again.  I can see the insurance company premiums going up sharply, not because the companies are losing money, but because they are not making as much as they want. 

Before Matthew last year, Florida had no BIG claim events since 2004.  What happened to all of the money they collected over the last 10-12 years that they had practically no claims

Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico and it will take a long time for the island to recover.

Thousands of people from the island are moving to Central Florida where there is already a large Puerto Rican population.

The two main issues I have with this is "flooding the job market" and "lack of assimilation"

The economy is starting to recover and unemployment is going down, but when you bring thousands more people into an area, the available jobs won't support it.  I assume that FEMA will be helping these people at first, but eventually that help will go away. 

The Orlando area already has large areas (probably at least 25 percent) where english is rarely heard.  If I go to a south Orlando restaurant, store, or gas station I am the one trying to communicate using a different language.  There seems to be very little effort to assimilate to english and I see more Puerto Rico flags than American.
