q2 setup help (r1q2 crashing)
« on: November 07, 2013, 04:13:41 PM »
Hey,

My brother (tc) is finally looking to re-install and play q2 again. Just formatted his computer, got the latest drivers/etc for his hardware and I gave him my Q2 folder. When r1q2 crashed he tried downloading the latest version, with the same result.

Radeon 9500 Video Card
Windows XP Pro 32-Bit
OpenGL Version: 6.14.108545

It seems to be some incompatibility issue with his ATI drivers, the error log is in the following post due to it's length.

Already attempted:
- Ensured there are no stray .dll files associate with openGL/ati in the Q2 directory.
- Backing off ATI drivers one version, same issue in both cases.
- Changing the parameters of r1q2 to directory/r1q2.exe +set vid_ref r1gl.
- Has not installed/tried any other client (i.e. AprQ2)

We've been scouring the old R1CH forums and found a few threads that looked promising but can't see past the first page. He also started a thread on acmectf.com/forum here: http://www.acmectf.com/forum/index.php/topic,3907

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

h0ps

What happens if you run regular q2?

I'd tell you to go with q2pro which runs so much better than r1q2 and is included in Elysium's Q2 Starter...BUT...you cannot use anti on the latest q2pro and you are CTF...SO...I don't think that's going to work unless you can get an anti exception from ACME...

you might try rolling his drivers even further back, or setting the program specific settings in the radeon controls to very basic settings for r1q2.

judging by the crash dumps it seems to be their driver .dll taking a shit

The only other thing I can think of is maybe removing his q2 config files and loading up and letting q2 create a fresh default .cfg for him. I don't think there are any cvars/settings that are incompatible with ati/amd cards but that would make sure your config isn't causing it.

I don't worship the devil. Jesus is Lord, friend. He died for your sins. He will forgive you if you just ask.
