My first experience with id games was in 1994, playing Wolfenstein 3D on my family's 80386sx 16MHz. I had downloaded the shareware version from a local BBS over the external 14.4bps modem I bought at age 14. That machine had 2MB of RAM, a 40MB hard drive, and a 256KB Trident VGA card. It got about 20fps in Wolfenstein with the viewport set to ~50% of what was surely a 640x480 screen.
You'd be chasing someone with a nailgun, and their player would be making these hilarious "Waiiyeieieeeeeeeeeee!!" sounds as it was being hit.Good times. (BTW, A couple years ago, I extracted those very sounds from QTEST and now use them in Q2.)
Any chance I could get a copy of those sounds?
those telefrag sounds are definitely from quake 1.
The particularly goofy sound I'd mentioned above is in the pak as player/*/pain25_2.wav
