Operation: "QUAKE2ALIVE"!

Ok...Since this game is starting to rot in hell like all other old games we have to do something!
Squad, i present you operation quake2alive:
Will have a own website With leagues and server info, if you push the forum button you will be redirected to TS forum(if ok!)

Will host servers, arrange leagues worldwide etc.

And another idea is: what if we make a q2 onlinemod for zd and st?
But i would liek to ask: "would ayone help me out with starting this? "

I forgot a few things, it should have mapping contests, mod contests, skin contests etc!

Sounds a little over-ambitious, I feel burned out just reading about it! Besides, most of those things are being done at some level at tastyspleen already.

IMO, what we really need is a way to attract more attention and bring in new players. I honestly think there's people out there that would come back to Q2 if they actually knew there was still an active community and servers left to play on.

I do think this site could use a little more polish and organization though (no offense quadz!  ). In fact, over the weekend I decided to check on how active Quake I still was. I don't think they have more active players than we do, but I was impressed with their main community site: http://www.quakeworld.nu/. I actually just finished completely remaking my Q2 demo installer after seeing what theirs looked like: http://nquake.com/. I'm also jealous of how clean and functional their main game client (ezQuake) menu is. 

I guess the real question is how do we find a viable method of reaching potential new players?

BTW, I think more Q2 mods would hurt more than it would help.

I just downloaded EZQuake and wanted to test joining a server.
I can't even put in a server in the server list. I wouldn't know how to add one.
So it isn't that easy.

nQuake doesn't install as it should.

I remember trying to play quake and I couldn't figure out how to start playing so I stopped. I'm sure that happens a lot.

quakeworld is epic, and really fun to play

however, i cant find any damn servers i have no clue why either, cause i have been on an empty server before, and some one will come drop me an ip to connect to a server i didnt even see in the server browser >_>

its just a bitch to find and play games with quakeworld, the game itself with the nquake client and everything is the easiest shit ever to give advanced configuration

this must be a problem that many people run into when they go into quake2 as well

You should download ezQuake and then press multiplayer, go to sources and select them all, then you'll see plenty of servers!

I have had several old players return to Q2 who didn't even know it was around after viewing my Tastyspleen New Years Eve bash on Xfire.
With the systems we run now it would be so easy to broadcast your own matches over Xfire.
Even if you didn't want to do it live in a match you can still live broadcast demos.

You should download ezQuake and then press multiplayer, go to sources and select them all, then you'll see plenty of servers! 

That sources list only has a dummy in it. The nQuake installer didn't work, so I just installed standard ezQuake. (I'm on macosx)
There is no "insert" key on my keyboard.
So I'm stuck

i think an a little edge league clone would do well maybe not a league... maybe just a bo3 in one day cup? it cuts down on map decision time, just hop in and ready up... and everyone seems to love edge

Actually, if you really wanted to do it right, you'd bribe a user experience designer and then a graphical designer to first wireframe what the user interface should be and then put styling to it. Asking programmers to build user interfaces is how you end up with things like Emacs and Blender: tons of features, steep learning curve, significant barrier to entry.

Side note, most programmers, especially those who would work on a game engine in the first place, really don't want to be bothered building user interfaces. They are tedious, require far more code than you might think, and aren't really the "sexy" parts of the game that put a smile on your face when you get it right. They are almost as dry as writing documentation for your code

Not saying your goal isn't a good one -- it really is. I'm just perhaps shedding some light on why it isn't already so.
