Quake / Re: Quake4

Raven has done good multiplayer in the past, my favorite one was probably Jedi Outcast. Jedi Academy was good too, but the multiplayer was pretty buggy, lots of exploits that screwed up lightsaber damages (like spinning or wiggling the mouse to create one hit kills). Ironically Jedi Academy is the one I played the most for some reason. Probably because everyone else was playing it and I got attached to the game before the exploits were discovered. Didn't stop me from playing the game from 2003-2007 though, it was a fun run. Another favorite of mine that Raven did was Heretic II.

I really liked quake 4's single player. It played like a really good expansion to doom 3. It also had a ton of nostalgia for us q2 players pumped into it. Having to play as a marine that can't run until you are stroggified was kind of lame, and weapon upgrades is a crappy gimmick to stop you from getting stronger weapons earlier. I think that those things are minor though.

The multiplayer was a huge fail. Raven had 10 years of nostalgic quake glory to influence their multiplayer, and they made a shitty quake 3 clone. Seriously? I know Raven focuses mainly on SP, but with all of the potential possibilities for the multiplayer, you had to actually TRY to screw that up.

Hehe, well.. The day the game came out, I went to Best Buy in the morning, managed to pick up the last copy before they were sold out. On the way home I thought to myself "Man, there's no way they can screw this up, its Quake.". I was not buying the game for its single-player which turned out to be the best part of the game. I bought the game to experience Quake in a whole new way, I thought that it could had been revolutionary. Unfortunately you are right, it is a Quake 3 clone. Actually, its more like Quake 3 meets Doom 3, so it is a little different from the other Quake games. It just seemed to me they put way more work into the single player than the multi player, and thats not why most people buy Quake. After the game came out it seemed they realized this and tried to patch the game to death to makeup for their mistake, and they did make it better, but it was too little too late as far as the community was concerned.

Long story short, they crapped the bed, realized it and tried to cover it up in lysol. People wanted Quake 4 not Duake 3 Arena: Resurrection of the Strogg.

Is the Quake 4 terrible? No, singleplayer is pretty good, multiplayer was terrible at first, got better with patches, but by the time they got it decent the community went elsewhere.

Yeah its pretty common from what I read off R1CH's forums. As others have said you can add it to the exceptions list in AVG. You could also just try switching anti-virus solutions too. I recommend Avast, I always preferred that one, at least for free anti-virus anyways. I'm not running it at the moment (recently did a reformat and haven't bothered installing it yet) so I can't tell you if it would have a false positive on r1q2's anti-cheat module or not, but I'm willing to bet its a better anti-virus solution than AVG ;).

You guys ever played Nexius?  It's a game made with the q3 engine, very cool playstyle, think quake 2 meets unreal.

played it, i think it sucks... the shitty weapons kill it

I agree, I never liked Nexuiz's weapons either. Alot of them are just spammers and I mean like a constant stream of rockets coming out. Plus I hated the physics of Nexuiz, it felt like I was on the moon. But hey, some people like Nexuiz I guess.

As far as my thoughts on Quake IV, its not that bad. I haven't played it in a few years though, but it was decent. It just needed the good patches it got later on much earlier. I still prefer Quake 2, but if anyone wants someone to play a game of Quake 4 with, I'll play. You can find me on the tastyspleen irc channels.

I see naders fairly often, they don't bother me though. I just shoot them ;).
