So I copied my pak files and maps over but no dice. I am getting a weird red background that flickers with the game rendered in a small window although I am set to Open GL. Is three anything else I need to copy over?

Hey guys,
I've been away from Q2 a few months as my 10 year old Mac finally gave up the ghost and I was then away all summer. I am trying to reinstall the game but all of the instructions I have seen are super technical and I am at a loss. Any way to "easily" get up and running again? I used to have either Fruits of Dojo or Yamagi Q2 running but I can't remember how I did it.

What I did so far:
I downloaded & installed the Quetoo.org version

Then I get to:
Compiling
Compiling this version of Quake II is actually quite easy if you follow the Quetoo developers' guide to install all of the game's dependencies. Once you've installed the dependencies, simply typing make should build the game for you. The INSTALL file located in the source directory covers the details and walks you through installing the Quake II game data, too.

I tried reading all this stuff and got lost immediately.

Can anyone hook up an old timer who wants to get his frag on?

Thx,

Tim

weapons / Not able to download maps?
« on: December 02, 2018, 11:50:58 AM »
Hey guys, I am on Mac and the client I am using does not auto download new maps, textures, etc... I usually go to http://whaleseye.tastyspleen.net/quake2/weapons/maps/?C=M;O=D

to get new maps, but I recently started getting a 403 error:

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /quake2/weapons/maps/ on this server.

Any remedy?

Thanks,

Tim

weapons / Can't download certain maps/sound/models--help requested

hey, Happy post-Thanksgiving! A few of the new airstrikes (flipper, 767) and maps are preventing me from connecting. Certain files won't download and it locks me out. Is it possible to add the following to the downloads area so I can get squared away?

-767 wav files (all)
-flipper wav file
-whatever is in the weapons/models/other folder

also, for some reason I can never connect to not quite dead simple. (marics_ds) It keeps saying I have the wrong version of the map.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Jay,
I had to repurchase the mac version of q2 and it took me three tries since ebay knuckleheads kept sending me the windows version. Your directions, while likely helpful to some, are pretty confusing to me. Can you provide additional guidance? Please see below

1. Create your Quake2 directory. [I did this in terminal but it doesn't look like it created a directory. Am I doing something wrong? do i need to add something to the string?]
  mkdir -p ~/.quake2/baseq2

2. Install the Quake2 game data [can't I just copy from the disc and from the extracted 3.20 to the baseq2 folder? Excuse my ignorance, but I don't know how this step works. do I change "path" to the path of where the files to be copied are located?]
  cp /path/to/pak*.pak ~/.quake2/baseq2

3. Compile AprQ2 [same as above. Do I make "path" the location of the aprq2 files?]
  cd /path/to/aprq2/trunk
  make -j3

4. Install the binaries [do i need to do anything else here?]
  install bin/aq2 ~/.quake2
  install bin/game.so ~/.quake2/baseq2

5. Install the optional game data (recommended)
  svn export --force data ~/.quake2

6. Start the game [am i going to have to start the game from terminal every time?]
  cd ~/.quake2
  ./aq2

Hey all,
I thought I might piggyback on this older thread as I am having issues getting booted off Whale's Eye, and it was recommended that I check in with you guys for technical assistance.

I'm on Mac and have been using the Fruitz of Dojo client for several years. There were some new maps around Christmas and I kept overflowing and getting the boot---2-3 times per round. Now that those maps have cycled out, I am still getting booted. Tried altering config file---nada. Very weird. I wanted to try another client so I downloaded AprQ2 raw files as well as Macports and Xcode and thought maybe rebuilding my install would fix it. The problem: I am not an IT whiz and have no idea what I'm doing.  I read through this thread but it's all Greek to me. :help:

Any advice or suggestions on how to remedy this situation (short of going to Windows)?

I would really appreciate it...I miss getting my frag on...
