I keep getting kicked from Vanilla whenever I join. I thought maybe it was that Anticheat had been made a requirement, and since I've been running EGL via WINE under Linux I haven't been able to use it (Anticheat crashes with WINE). So I booted into XP and put Anticheat.dll in my folder, and tried. Kick!
So I thought maybe it was the hi-res textures I had failing some kind of check: Removed them, and I still get kicked. Finally, I removed my pak4 (It has most of the weapon SFX replaced with Q3 and Q4 counterparts), still no dice. I've never cheated (Quite seriously), and I don't think of any shit talking I've done lately was all that bad. 3

About DGA...
By default, my xorg.conf has this entry: Section "Module" Load "extmod" I editited it like so: Section "Module" Load "dbe" SubSection "extmod" Option "omit xfree86-dga" EndSubSection Doesn't help. I've even switched to a PS/2 mouse, and deleted the configs and started over; still have the issue. Maybe it would help to more accuratly describe the symptom. You can turn the mouse, say 10 degrees, and it will jump maybe 30. It gets worse when there's a lot of enemies on screen as well. (This is the same on any of the Acceleration settings). I've tried tweaking the video settings, etc, to no avail. 4

Well, after using it for a bit, I have some thoughts...
I can see why this is labeled as beta. Running the standard EGL results in smooth framerate, but the mouse movement is... herky jerky if you're moving at the same time. Also, high definition textures seem to be ignored. The SDL port has no such issues (Though the sensitivity needs to be jacked up a lot more), but the frame rates in mutli are horrid I was barely topping 10FPS during FFA. The single player game doesn't suffer from this, though. Sound is also extremely staticy unless 48KHz sampling is chosen, and even then, it sounds just slightly distorted (But nothing major). Despite its flaws, I really hope the Linux port gets serious attention, as it has the potential to be bad ass. For now, though, I guess it's back to the Win32 build via WINE. 5

Ah, thank you kind sir; that's exactly what was wrong. Seems that the INI was still pointing to opengl32.dll. Everything works like a charm, now.
Performance is noticeably faster now (I have a GeForce 7600GT with the latest binary blob off nVidia's site slapped into my kernel). 6
So I made the switch to Linux completely a few weeks ago, and have been running EGL via WINE to get my Q2 fix. However, stability leaves something to be desired (It loves to hang on exit), and performance isn't quite as good as it was under Windows due to the overhead of the compatibility layer.
Then I heard there was an EGL beta that's Linux native, and decided to give it a shot. However, it fails to initialize, giving me some error about "QGL" not being found. Doing a little research, this is apparently some kind of bullshit QT GL GUI library or something, but the only problem is that I can't find it anywhere. Anyone run this engine and care to impart some tips on how to get the bastage to work? 7

Note that this is scaled down from 1600x1200 with 8xS FSAA and 16x Anisotropic filtering. I don't use anything cheap like bright skins or counters, though I do mildly adjust my gamma with Powerstrip due to Quake II being darker than a bum's asshole at midnight on anything but a 3Dfx card. I also have a mixture of QIII and QIV sounds to replace the weapon effects and some other things (Like teleportation, etc), as well as some of the HUD graphics from Adam's PAK. edit: I also play the Quake 1 soundtrack on shuffle with Winamp whenever I play. 8

I was curious as to how most of you have your keyboards laid out; I myself use a very unorthodox controls schema for all FPS games I play that have mouselook (Which has garnered some very amusing expressions at LAN parties):
I find using the D-pad to move/strafe extremely intuitive, and I can play for hours on end and have absolutely no hand strain. I make all this work by using the program JoyToKey to bind simulated key strokes to my PSX controller, and I aim/fire/switch weapons with the mouse in my right hand (Wheel mouse): this gives me a total of 13 actions that I can easily reach with both hands at any given time. The "Shit Talk" buttons require some reaching, but I typically only use them in relative safety, or at the end of a match. 12
Quake / Re: Why we play« on: August 21, 2007, 06:49:44 AM »
Quake II was the first game I started playing when I finally got broadband (I used to play 1-on-1 Doom 2 on a 14.4 modem back in the day, but that doesn't count) in 2003, and I keep coming back to it.
I built a Core 2 Duo rig about a month ago and started using EGL+High Resolution Textures, and I'm more engrossed by it than ever due to the pure sex of how it can look and run now. Despite having a ton of legitimately purchased FPS games (Including Quake 3), I only play Q2 regularly. There's just something about this damn game that's had me addicted for going on 4 years now.
