Doctorates in information technology fields are relatively useless in the private sector.  Unless you want to become a professor, or get involved with government funded research programs, your best bet is to get out with a Bachelors of Science and start working.  MS and PhD will get you maybe $5-10K starting off, and that amount is easily attainable through performance reviews for your first few years of working.  So you can basically make the same thing or more by working for the time you would spend in graduate school.  And you're not accumulating that debt.

Starting salaries for tech fields vary by region.  In the Boston area, which is where I am, you're probably talking $55-65K.  It's not impossible to make $100K or more within 5 or 6 years, tho.

How do you define unfair? You have the same opportunity to fill that job as anyone else. You choose not to. If money is your concern, you know ahead of time you can make $60K without a college diploma, why not take one of those jobs? On the other, if you're going in to CS because you genuinely enjoy the subject, what does it matter what other people in other trades are being paid?

I define unfair as having better credentials and working harder than someone else, yet they get paid at a similar rate as me. Also, I prefer not to short-sell my abilities for some remedial job, when I can expand my education and my opportunities while working at something that I enjoy at a great pay rate.
