I'm flying in early Wednesday. I figured I'd jump on IRC either from the hotel, or just via my BlackBerry, to see where everyone else plans to setup.

Which ever one of us gets in the BYOC first on Wed night should save a table like we did last year. The con allows table saves (to a point anyway)

Well, I am pretty fuckin' special. But I also have no interest in participating in the BYOC. I imagine I'm still allowed to setup my laptop somewheres and participate in random pickup games etc, right?

...... but quakecon is the BYOC. I'm not sure what you thought the BYOC was, but that's precisely where you would set up your laptop and participate in random pickup games, etc.

Besides the BYOC, there's just an area with vendor booths, and the occasional scheduled events such as (for ex.) John Carmack's talk.

The BYOC == the giant 24/7 lan party room, the heart of quakecon.

(Edit: There's also of course an area where the tournaments are being played, but unless it's different this year, you'll still need BYOC access to get to the tournament area.)

Hey gang, Jube here! Unfortunately Pappy-R is unable to attend QuakeCon as planned this year due to health issues. He's doing fine but will be out of action for a couple of days, and obviously is unable to travel to the event. In the meantime you are stuck with me.

Wow I feel so utterly pwnt. I thought the byoc was some organized subset of games/tournaments. I figured anyone who registered and checked off the "bringing my pc" box was welcome to come and play there. Shit. Anyone have experience with the waiting list? If I don't get to setup there, I'm basically wasting my vacation time and a lot of money in airfare and lodging, heh. In all seriousness, I'd pay off the guy at the door tonight..

The couple times I've been (2005, 2007) the BYOC has never reached 100% capacity. (Despite it being booked solid on the website.) So everyone on the waiting list got admitted by sometime Thursday afternoon.

So if this year is similar, you'll be fine. (Indeed, if one were positive the BYOC would not fill up to capacity, there would be little point in actually waiting in line... just show up Thursday afternoon and walk right in.)

Errrr..... actually, checking the "bringing my pc" box is the BYOC (Bring Your Own Computer.)

So if you did check that box, then your View My Registration page at quakecon.org should say one of two things:

Either,

Bring Your Own Computer
You may bring a computer. A spot was reserved for you.

Or,

...something about being on the waiting list if you registered after the slots were all full.
