I'm sure a lot of his statistics are correct although I'm suspicious of his claim about importing jobs. Maybe the point he is making should have been that, in this day and age, with basic education available to everyone, and any knowledge available to you on the internet, TV, books, libraries etc - there's no excuse for anyone to be illiterate or have such a lack of knowledge of the world around them. The opportunities for learning at any higher level are also here.

You didn't really attack him - I just read this and it was my first impression.  I hate it when people argue that the person who is saying "blank" is a moron, therefore "blank" is moronic, but you didn't do that.

Further, that comment about tech jobs is something I've read in "The World Is Flat" but I don't remember much more than the impression we can't fill tech jobs fast enough even with importing immigrants.  I should find it again and see what it actually says.

As far as education - I think our higher education and its almost universal availability to people (even the fairly poor) who are willing to put in some hard work and sacrifice is one of the biggest assets this country has.  I think it's my favorite thing about America. 

As for K-12, as an educator I feel like some schools are really "with it" as far as their quality of teaching.  Others SUCK.  The teachers are bad - they don't know how to treat children to get the desired response.  My experience as a K-12 student was that you could get whatever education you wanted at my school - they prepared me well, but if you didn't put effort in you definitely could just slide through.    The challenge - with so many other ways to entertain yourself today - is to get kids to enjoy learning so they don't WANT to slide through.

Well, I'll look into the tech position thing cause it's bugging me.
