I'm pretty confused, at this point, as to how anyone could "think they heard gunfire"...

What a load of shit! If you hear a gun going off, it isn't some little popping noise. It's fucking really loud (even more so in an enclosed space like an apartment) and completely unmistakable. I'm really surprised that this cop is going to get away with this shit with such a terribly idiotic excuse and a paperwork error by the grand jury.
