Damn. Now I have a clearer picture of what Christopher Hitchens was talking about in a 2002 debate where he'd argued in favor of "regime change" in Iraq. (Hitch had said something to the effect that if you hear someone try to tell you "sure, Saddam and his sons are bad guys, but…" that they don't know what they're talking about.)

I would recommend seeing the movie he mentioned, The Devil's Double, but he pretty much just completely outlined every little thing that happens in the movie.

Most of that video was new to me. Never heard of the movie, but it was a good watch.

If voting day was tomorrow how would y'all vote? Or would you not vote? I'm not asking for A or B. Would leaning towards classic liberal views or moderate conservative views force you to vote for a candidate you don't like? And, how would the democratic candidate contrast to trump with the liberal foundation of free speech, power to the people, private property rights, peace, etc? That's probably a tougher dilemma than if it were flipped. I assume most conservative leaning moderates that aren't fans of trump are probably more disgusted with the current left, but that's not saying they'd go for trump. Plenty of no-votes in there.

Last time, it wasn't that the "democrat candidate" was seemingly too radical, it was just that she was a TREMENDOUS CUNT. Which in a way... can be forgiveable. Mmm, Yes, I know, allow me to expound upon that.

Forgivable in the sense of... compared to the fucking loons the democrat party is fielding this time. When you can honestly say "Trump is the most moderate person to choose from.", shit's FUUUUUUUUUUUUUKT.

There are things I do not like about Trump.  There are many things I do not like about the ideas that are being laid out by the Dem candidates.
For me, it is to early to have a firm decision.

Would leaning towards classic liberal views or moderate conservative views force you to vote for a candidate you don't like? And, how would the democratic candidate contrast to trump with the liberal foundation of free speech, power to the people, private property rights, peace, etc?

Even though they were always long shots, it would be fun to see someone like Tulsi Gabbard or Andrew Yang win the nomination, as these seem to be the two candidates most willing to buck the establishment narrative on some issues.

Six months ago I'd have predicted Kamala Harris would be the Democratic nominee; but after Tulsi nuked her in the 2nd debate, I presume the nominee is most likely to be Elizabeth Warren.

Personally as someone who is by choice not a member of any of the political parties; but who had voted a near straight-Democratic-ticket between 1992 and 2016, I find myself repelled by the rot that has spread so far through the Democratic party that its positions seem to be devoid of principled stances. In the 2018 California primaries, I ran the candidate statements from all parties through an informal sieve:

- fundamental right to self defense
- free fucking speech ("hate speech" is an invented category, that is—nonetheless—constitutionally protected)
- constitutional republic & electoral college vs. tyranny of the geographical minority
- class-based vs. race-based affirmative action
- securing borders & restricted immigration vs. "borders are racist"
- wage gap nonsense
- anti-nuclear = non-starter (Gen IV nuclear should be full steam ahead)
- unrestricted late-term abortion (how about instead: maximize bodily autonomy while minimizing harm to conscious beings?)
- 'gender is a social construct'
- 'all cultures are different but equal'

That's off the top of my head (I'd never 'wrote' it down before) but that's what I had in mind during the 2018 primaries. And for the first time ever, by a process of elimination, nearly all Democrats in 2018 got crossed off my list.

I don't know who I'll vote for in 2020. I may write-in someone I wish were running.

I can resonate with what everyone said. Still trying to figure out why the democrats are becoming so out of touch with their more informed constituency. I keep saying 'classic liberal'. I'm not sure if that's correct or not, but I mean respectable liberal prioritizing the issues I listed over a 3 year old's right to choose their gender. Relying on the youth and the dumb to show up to the polls seems like a long shot.

I'm not sure yet either, but the democratic ticket is currently my least appealing option.

:righteous:  Those are issues that I consider also.  Having them as a list is a good way to judge the candidates.  I think I will make a list also, just to make sure I am considering all of the issues that matter to me.

I get the Trudeau painted like a burnt matchstick thing, but I have no idea who Greta is.

TO THE WIKIMOBILE!

My post-wiki assessment:

 ::)

"At home, Thunberg convinced her parents to adopt several lifestyle choices to reduce their own carbon footprint, including giving up air travel and not eating meat."

You wanna leave less mess on the planet, I get it. You don't wanna eat things that have faces and offspring and nervous systems, I sort of get it. But if one of your goals is apparently to eliminate air travel... FUCK YOU. People gotta get around. And planes burn lots of fuel, but if you divide that by the number of people and the pounds of cargo ON those planes, those stats begin to appear a little more reasonable. And while it might be fine to ship 40,000 trailer containers on a boat, PEOPLE have places to be and can't spend 2 weeks on a fucking ship when it would take 8 hrs on a plane. The environment is important, but no one's going to shitcan about 105 years of historical progress with commercial flights because of it.

The environment is important, but no one's going to shitcan about 105 years of historical progress with commercial flights because of it.

The poor lass seems to have been indoctrinated by actor/activist parents into the apocalyptic belief that 'growth-oriented capitalism' is destroying the world, and that we have 12 years left before the changing climate irreversibly renders the planet uninhabitable for future generations.

On a related note, I found the charts in the following video interesting (starting about 3:40) illustrating that 200 years ago, over 95% of the world's inhabitants lived in extreme poverty, and that fraction has declined to less than 10% today.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjuUJadxQzw

(The chart in the video does indeed appear to match the data available here: https://data.worldbank.org/topic/poverty )

So perhaps Greta's parents shouldn't be so quick to dismiss the technology focused market driven economic engine that got us this far. (And if they truly cared about CO2 reduction, perhaps advocating for Gen IV Nuclear would make sense.)

But, if nothing else, a few amusing memes have resulted:
