I disagree with his opposition to the bump-stock ban.

I wonder if this guy also believes that fully automatic weapons should be as accessible as handguns or hunting rifles.

Because, yes, there is a difference between the two. The automatic submachine gun is exceedingly dangerous in hands of the wrong person. A bump stock semi-auto is dangerous TO THE USER and innocent by-standers in the hands of a person NOT intending to do wrong. To someone not as experienced with firearms, it can cause control of the weapon to get away from you.

And if he'd agree that a full auto should be restricted because of the rate of fire, then why wouldn't that apply to a semi-auto made to fire just as fast?

Same shit with those trigger crank things. Those are maybe less dangerous because when you stop turning, they stop firing. But then again, you're holding the crank and not the grip. And you're still firing at a rate faster than the weapon was made for.

Perhaps all his friends are responsible upstanding ex-military types. I know plenty of people who AREN'T upstanding and they have guns, and the LAST fucking thing any of us need is one of them running around with a Thompson or an MP5.

But to his main point:

I wonder... if alt-right assholes are infiltrating these peaceful protests and causing all the trouble, why aren't they also going to the Democratic conventions and stirring shit up there too? Coincidence obviously.

Here's my view.

The 2nd amendment is crystal clear except for one thing.

Any time you require a paid permit or license for something, that thing becomes a privilege, not a right. The 2nd amendment indirectly yet firmly states that the right of the people to keep and bear arms is a natural right of all citizens. However, if this were taken literally, there would be no restrictions on the mentally unstable or known threats to individuals or society. So obviously, there must be SOME minor exceptions to this "right". However they should be minor.

"Shall not be infringed" however was not a suggestion, it was an order. And this must not be forgotten. Given this, the bump stock ban is an infringement. However, it is not a sword on which I am willing to fall. Bump stocks didn't exist for the longest time, and all of a sudden they pop up, and then they're gone. No biggie to me. A skilled marksman will virtually always be more deadly than a novice shooter with a bump stock, and skill cannot be outlawed. It must also be remembered that automatic weapons are not illegal in America. With a clean record, enough patience, and a lot of money, you can legally buy as many as you want. You must register each one, submit to an extremely extensive background check, get fingerprinted, and pay the exorbitant amount for a weapon manufactured before the 1986 ban.

In a world where our culture wasn't so highly degraded, I would be for automatic weapons being legal yet more highly regulated than other weapons. It completely defeats the purpose of the 2nd amendment to allow the government to have them while completely restricting all access to law abiding, mentally stable citizens. Of course, this concept must be regulated as well. People shouldn't have access to nukes, for example. But it is extremely difficult to have any system where you say "ok, JUST THIS amount of regulation, but no more" (capitalism vs socialism comes to mind as well). To maintain such a system requires a large degree of responsibility, maturity, and wisdom within a society's culture. Not a utopian view imo, but getting close.

The slippery slope just keeps everything in motion, today's minor change is tomorrow's norm, then it's on to the next minor change. We should be more focused on repairing our cultural problems than we are restricting rights of law abiding citizens.

today's minor change is tomorrow's norm, then it's on to the next minor change

Talking with a friend at the range today, he noted how California legislators (perhaps strategically) tend to enact multiple new restrictive gun laws each year, some constitutionally questionable, at a rate faster than they can be challenged in court.

A federal judge did recently strike down CA's "background checks for ammo purchases" law:

https://www.usnews.com/news/politics/articles/2020-04-23/judge-tosses-california-ammunition-purchase-law

But the law prohibiting online ammo purchases in CA remains in place. (Which, if nothing else, seems counterproductive in these COVID times.)

  *  *  *

On a related note, got to shoot my new Ruger GP100 revolver today. It's chambered for 10mm auto, and will also shoot .40 S&W. The 10mm kicks less harshly than I was anticipating (but moreso than the .40, as expected.) Trigger action feels good; I'm happy with the purchase.

Good deal. I don't own a revolver yet and coincidentally I just got done watching a bunch of .357 and .44 mag videos. I think i want to look at a Ruger Redhawk, the 8 shot .357. The .44 has the cool factor and the "kill anything in North America" factor, but I think I want a nice looking stainless/wood handle, and I'm not sure how much my hands would enjoy a .44 without a rubber grip. I've never shot a 44 so I'm just speculating.

A piston driven .308 is at the top of my list, but darn hard to find right now. Just want to get it and lose it overboard (juggling semi auto battle rifles while boating has always been a passion of mine) while fishing offshore before they get outlawed.  But after that I want to get a nice magnum revolver and a lever gun (be it a 30-30 or a 44 mag carbine).

Also quadz those 10mm rounds vary a good bit. Some are just like 40 s/w and some are a LOT hotter. Like 300+fps more. Try some different ammo out. You'd be surprised how different types of ammo group differently. With guns that don't have adjustable sights, some people may see it groups high and aim a little bit lower for example. But there's almost always a type of ammo out there that works for the particular gun and the habits of the shooter. Some guns are only mildly prone to this phenomenon, but some are like night vs day with different ammo.

Oh shit they make GP100's with a 3 inch barrell. I like that. That extra inch yields a considerable amount of velocity over a snub nose while still being practical. And it looks perfect.

I don't own a revolver yet ...

I'm pretty sure they still make them. Check out the Taurus Judge. A nice little home defense revolver, or a CC weapon that can drop a beast of a person as fat as Mama June in one shot. Fires 45 long colt or 410 shells. Mix and match, have fun. :rocketleft:

I don't have one. But I've wanted one for the longest time, and by god I will get one... one of these days.

Revolvers don't drop casings. Sometimes that's good.

Don't have a revolver either. My next purchase will be a Taurus g2c. Best budget pistol there is maybe. Revolver will come after.

How are the pistol/handgun laws in California quadz? Not as bad as the hoops of fire that I'm imagining one must jump through?

The judge is cool, but kinda gimmicky imo. While it's great to put five 36 caliber lead balls in someone with a single trigger pull, it's fairly impractical other than blasting someone in your doorway. People seem to complain about accuracy at medium ranges. S&W makes a gun just like the judge that shoots .410, 45 Colt, and 454 Casull iirc.

Quick video on 10mm vs 40 s/w. I love Paul Harrell. I've bi ge watched a lot of his videos, often listening while I'm running a bulldozer at work. I wish he had used more types of ammo. But it shows in mamy cases the power differencial is small.

Don't have a revolver either. My next purchase will be a Taurus g2c.

Taurus is my favorite revolver maker, but they make great semiautos too. Just checked their site about the G2c's. Looks like they come in 9mm and 40sw. I'm still permit carrying my old Taurus 32 snubby, though not as consistently as I used to. People have made fun of me for years for carrying a girls gun, but I don't give a shit. 32's are easy to be dead-nuts accurate with. Still, with shit happening in the country like it is when groups of the dumbest assholes get together to encourage each other in their self-righteous stupid-ness, I realize that 6 shots might not be enough these days... so I'm considering something in a 12shot.

S&W makes a gun just like the judge that shoots .410, 45 Colt, and 454 Casull iirc.

Called the "Governor" I think, basically a Judge copy.

I held a g2c, a glock 26, and a glock 43x at a shop 3 or 4 months ago. The g2c was SLIGHTLY heavier than the 43x, but was marginally more ergonomic to my hand than the others. Just felt very nice, the added spot for your pinky when the magazine is in makes it perfect. Combine that with all the reviews on YouTube(I saw all these AFTER the fact that I wanted one) I'm pretty sold on it. Overwhelming consensus of the gun enthusiast YouTube world is that the g2c is the best gun for the money(It's anywhere from $185-250). At the shop I was at it was 219, and im willing to pay that. I think the under 200 deals are pretty scarce now that the gun has the reputation it does now.

I just searched taurus g2c review in youtube to link a video in this post and every one is titled "best budget pistol?". I'm halfway through watching this one:

Check the top comment on that video. After researching it for awhile a realistic expectation seems to be that you get a gun 90% as good as those comparable to it for 40% of the price.

For that price it's very hard to beat. Almost a random impulse buy at the gun store. I'll probably pick one up before the election if I see one. Taurus historically had a lot of reliability issues in their auto loaders but it seems like they've worked out nearly every issue in recent years. Their repuation is going up quickly.

I get a week off starting thursday. I need to google search and see if there are any gun shows happening near the Tampa bay area, unless they're banned due to covid. Wanna stock up on ammo at a minimum.

Nice. I didn't know there was such a thread. Thanks :)

Shoutbox isn't the place for rehashing this. Here's the thread about DM server spawn farthest from 2006/2007:

but that's *NOT what the DM server is supposed to cater to

It's not ideal for 1v1 situations, but that's what the DM server is supposed to cater to. Also, there are 7 other maps besides DM4 (actually 8 for the automatic mymap map between dm8 and dm1). I think there are more positives than negatives.

It happens to better players too. I know I've been in first, or second place, only to die and spawn right next to the other leading player multiple times in a row, and having to dodge rockets in a narrow corridor without any weapons myself (other than blaster).

It's not the best for 1v1 situation

I saw a clearly-new player earlier, and it spawned him like 3 or 4 times in a row right next to a better player. Instant death each time they spawned. I imagine that can be discouraging and frustrating, particularly when someone is trying to get a handle on the game. Spawn farthest would avoid this.

Might be interesting to code a hybrid spawn function that doesn't focus on "farthest" so much as avoiding the few most congested spawn points?
