if you don't like a couple extra configuration files and a few more mainly essential packages why don't you install ubuntu server.

some one actually suggested that to me already, it actually seems like a pretty solid way to get a good desktop system out of ubuntu without so much bullshit...

buuuut i like crunchbang :) i just need to figure out how to get this shit to work!!!!

besides... #! is like the coolest name for a distro ever XD

hmm... would using sh (simlink to dash) have a different chance of succeeding vs just using bash to run it?

cause i got doom3 to install and such, but it wont start >_> guessing a bad compilation... i guess i could try it lol but id have to clear off the doom installation first and such, so if its not worth trying i wont do it... need feedback on that one

the bourne shell is linked to bash on many linux distributions.  bash is updated..it has advanced redirections, and advanced functionality. to run the script in another shell you can usually execute the shell just like any other program, and maybe use a -c _command_ argument if necessary.

I'd imagine the shell could matter in the configure script, but since bash is probably backwards compatible with bourne it wouldn't matter.  you're probably better off making sure you have all the software required to run the program you're compiling installed and taking a look at the messages displayed.

well nah... sh just references your shell for compiling shit not specifically the bourne shell... and in #! sh is a symlink to dash which to my understanding is a faster modified version of bash thats more complient with the open standards... i was using the command "bash installscriptname" to run it which specifies use the Bourne Again SHell, but i remember reading guides and shit a long time ago when i originally installed q3 and doom3 in linux, and i would use "sh installscriptname"

i just dont know the real difference between dash and bash as far as compiling stuff and install scripts and shit goes... the first gen bsh has nothin to do with the equation there lol

This is how I felt when I was on Ubuntu. Lack of Linux people out here :rocketleft:

Although, I use Linux for just about everything else other than games

But Quake II is a bitch on linux for me :bigcry:

psh... ubuntu is bloated garbage... granted it is crazy easy :) if you cant get something working on ubuntu, you dont want to even try more advanced distros...

The fact is, that no other disto that I have tried actually works with my 64-bit system :(

i wanted something really minimalistic and snappy instant fast :D crunchbang is built off of debian the same as ubuntu but the way its built is meant to be as small as possible...

I'll have to try this crunchbag

i got most of my games running just fine in ubuntu back when i used it... was playing cpma pickups from ubuntu too, and i played through the entire doom3 game in ubuntu :)

The fact that you can play a 2005 game from id software on Ubuntu and not a 1997 game sucks :grrrr:

HOWEVER for some reason doom3 didnt compile right :( so it crashes on start up... and quake2 wont even compile... and so i havent even wanted to touch any other game :/

Quake 2 for life! :headbang:

If I can't get Quake 2 to work, there's just no point in living :dramatic: :LAME: :dohdohdoh:

But seriously though, I really would like Quake 2 to work. I think I'll try this modification for Jay Dolan's Aprq2. But I'm not sure if it would work on the distro that I am going to try out.

So far, the sorts of errors you've posted about have not been related to the particular distro you're running.

What's the current issue?

things tend to work more on ubuntu because it has more by default... crunchbang is built to be a minimalistic distro, and its also built off of the newest debian release instead of being like a ripped down version of ubuntu like most new distros these days...

and i posted my problem in the other thread :/ conchars.pcx is failing to load and crashing the game even though i have all the files there

The pics/conchars.pcx file is considered a tell-tale file that your installation is correct and you are running from the correct directory. It bombs the game because if conchars.pcx doesn't exist the game can't display any text and tell you what is wrong so it's pointless to continue. R1q2 will warn you about it with the path to the file, old Q2 from idSoftware won't, so it looks like you are running r1q2 or another version that uses similar code.

Make sure you don't have a CasE maTching problem. The file name and the path should be all lower case.
Second thing to check is that your startup script is changing to the proper directory for playing the game. Make sure you don't have a case matching problem with those paths since Linux is case sensitive and Windows isn't. Dragging your Windows stuff over to Linux can be a cause of problems.

figured out the problem :P

apparently running the file from the damn directory isnt enough to tell it its supposed to run in that directory... still gotta ./ :( lol didnt know that, now i do xD obviously still learning...

wont even have to fuss with it so much once i get another desktop set up so i can run xp on this one 24/7 and run #! on the other :)
