If memory serves me correctly, there's: Frostwire(already mentioned and prolly the best of choices imo), Ares, Bearshare, Kazaa, Torrents, XDCC(if you like spyware, adaware, viruses, trojans, anything like Kind0ne does), 4shared.c*m, or fucking use google for crying out loud and actually do something for yourself for a change instead of being lazy and asking everyone else.

Yeah, I've heard of people using programs to rip the audio from posted YouTube videos. Sometimes that's a bit like going by way of your elbow to get to your ass. I'd rather use utorrent + piratebay for "borrowed" mp3s.

Also, a lot of videos uploaded to YouTube usually have shitty bitrates for audio even when the title of the video says "HD audio". Back when I was downloading shit from Napster back in 1999, 128k audio was okay because the files were usually around 5mb and wouldn't take long to download. I could ignore that shitty fluttering sound in all the high frequencies and cymbals. These days, I'd rather have my mp3s at 256k CD quality.

Newsgroups are where its at. Giganews has 838 days of binary retention now a days. That means anything uploaded in over the last 2 years I can get at my full internet connection speed. Better privacy, no client to client connections, and my download speed isn't dependant on how many people are seeding the files. Win win!!

I think I'm at about ~14 years on the internet now? (first time using it was on Web TV, I think) and I've STILL not taken the time to learn how to use newsgroups.  Other than always hearing that it's the best way to get the newest games, w4r3z, pr0n, music, etc., I don't know much more about it than that.

Is it sorta like FTP, in that it's a different way to access info than HTTP, or the typical WWW?

it's a newsgroup.  different setup & protocals vs ftp, http, etc.  Closest thing today would be mass e-mailing to a cleint but with the perks of only downloading what you want to read vs all the e-mails, and you can have nearly unlimited attachment sizes.

It's not flashy enough to be used by most people since 1997.
