Attention required: signal timing is out of range
« on: August 30, 2008, 10:48:07 AM »
I know that this is a random question not really about quake but im going to try, so if I start my computer up without my monitor turned on before I start it turns to a black screen that says "attention required: signal timing is out of range", does anyone know how to fix this?

It appears that the refresh rate of your video card is incompatible with your monitor.

Start > Control Panel > Display, Click the "Monitor" tab look under the "monitor settings" dropdown box.
Set it to "optimal" or something that your monitor can use.

ps. The above is for XP sp2, it should be almost the same with 98/vista.

Do you have a custom refresh rate set for your computer?

When I had my old CRT monitor I would have my rRate(Refresh Rate)  @ 120hz (120fps afaik). To obtain that particular rRate I had to use a custom setting that would be locked in manually. Once I obtained an LCD monitor that particular rRate was incompatible b/c my new monitor would max at 75hz.

LCDs operate differently than CRTs. LCDs are guaged on response times, not refresh rates. Basically an LCD pixel is always showing a signal so the quicker the response time, the quicker the display updates. CRTs are similar to a TV, they show an image that is flashed to the tube at a rate determined by your video card's refresh rate.

What monitor are you using? That data can help us zero in on the problem you are having.

My best guess on the monitor issue without seeing it, is the hz setting needs to be determined.
Then any other vid issues can be addressed.

if it is a monitor issue it shouldn't be happening unless he manually changed something AFTER he hooked it up.  When a new monitor gets hooked up to XP/Vista it should auto-detect & re-set all the settings.  Always has for me.

Try safemode & see if it works there.  If it doesn't, could be something bigger.  bent pin?

i've only seen that error once or twice in ~20 years & it's always been a vid card that wouldn't send a signal tp a monitor, even though it SHOULD of been (like right after I updated to XP SP3 & rebooted, "turn off monitor" function wouldn't turn monitor back on).

but a bent pin can always cause a problem.  Hey, i'm shooting in the dark.  :D

Off Topic answer: Jenga is a game. Try to remove and restack pieces of a tower without toppling it.

Back on topic: If he is using a 3rd party program to control his hz rate the autodetect by XP may not be able to engage the default settings.

Any news homeslice?

it's an OLD crt?  what is it, SVGA (1024x768)?    if that's the case it could be vista is trying to put it to something it can't support.  Try 72, 75hz.  Plus try lower res, IE 800x600.  Mu old SVGA could do 800x600 75hz.  Could do 1024x768 @ 60 in windows, in linux it would only do 800x600 max, wouldn't run @ 1024 at all.

Sounds to me like the monitor is not changing up to the scan rate of the video card if you turn on the monitor after the computer is up. This monitor is a typical low-end specification unit. You have either tuned your driver scan rates outside the range acceptable to the monitor or it is having trouble detecting the scan rates at initialization.

From the user guide:
Horizontal scanning frequency 30-86kHz
Vertical scanning frequency 50-130Hz
Resolution (H x V) 1600 dots x 1200 lines non-interlaced maximum addressable resolution format at 65Hz

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/monitors/7901p/spec.htm

Turn on the monitor before starting the computer.
Make sure the monitor is correctly identified in Windows by brand and type. (Desktop properties, Settings)
Set Windows screen saver to blank screen and stop scan to initiate power save mode if power consumption is a concern.

While the system is up and active and after at least 30 minutes of operation, store the current frequencies in the monitor since you are probably using custom frequencies that the monitor needs to know about.
