Quake Sound Problem on CentOS 4
« on: August 04, 2005, 09:40:44 AM »
Ok.. Prolly no one noticed but I haven't been round and about on TS servers playin for some time...
Problem is, we just went through big upgrade on clinic servers from CentOS 3.5 (built from RHEL 3 source) to CentOS 4.1 (RHEL 4 source) and it has broken my quake  ???  >:(  :'( :'(

Actually, the only part that seems to be broken is the sound - it stutters... s s s s ow ow ow u u u n n n  duh duh d... you know, like it'a a tremelo on a fender amp turnd up super fast, recorded, then slowed down to 33 1/3... (uh, it's slow) I've been working and working, googleing, gaggleling, asking jeeves (who for a butler sure don't know much) and pooring over forums till the wee hours of the noon time trying to figure it out (why I haven't been playing or on the forums much) and haven't had much luck.

Going back to previous OS  isn't an option. Using a Win box really isan't an option either ( + back! + I won't  tempted to cross over to the dark side! :) ) and I really.don't.wanna.quit. so I'm askin for help.  I been using quake2-r0.16.1.tar.gz from icculous with no problems up till now. I would appreciate any help!

I thank you.
My wife (poor soul has to live with me on q2 withdrawel) would thank you.
My son-in-law and daughter (who's servers I got to  upgrade that broke my quake! and hear about it often) would definately thank you :)
My grandkids (all 6) would be grateful 'cause granpa would leave their machines alone :)
Prolly if they understood it, my dogs, cats, pet deer, foxes, raccons, skunks, guinea pigs and other odd varmits would thank you also.
My son could care less, thinks it's funny, but just in case he ever reads this I don't wanna leave him out...

Thanks,

QD

Hi QD,

I'm assuming other programs on the OS still play sounds OK, and it's just q2 exhibiting the problem(?)

Have you tried playing with s_mixahead in quake2?

My previous sound card & comp, the lowest I could go was 0.14 without stuttering.  My current cound card & comp I can go down to 0.04.  You might try raising your s_mixahead to 0.2 or 0.3 or even 1.0 and see if it makes any difference.  (1.0 would be extreme, but just for diagnostic purposes...)

HTH,

I appreciate the quick reply.

I can play wav files using noatun just fine. Got me totally vexed.

I had never heard of it until you asked about it ) -- I don't pay too much attention to the guts )
I tried all sorts of values but no go.

I thought perhaps it's something to do with 3.5 being a 2.4 kernel and 4.1 being a 2.6 so I went out and dloaded the src from iccolus and rebuilt the game. I'm not a programmer anymore - good thing all I had to do was hit make .  ;D   Still no good.  Don't know what to try next...

Thanks...

Well, unless I can figure out just what is used, I guess my q2 with sound days are over.

I decided to kern.* /dev/tty7  and follow the load.

I found that in the 2.6.9-11 kernel used in CentOS 4 sound support has changed - when I load q2, the messages on tty7 tell me "application quake2 uses obsolete OSS audio interface" and quake2 hangs.  If  I run sdlquake  it will load, but I get the out of sync sound. gah!

I downloaded fresh icculous code, updated all my X libs and recompiled the game enabling all sound interfaces - no joy. :(
Oh, another thing - Selinux is standard, but I even dropped it out with no change.

I can't find anything on any forum/newsgroup/google/smoogle/fraggle rock/etc other than, and I'm quoting here:

"oh yeah, I had that problem but I fixed it."
"yeah, I had that problem until I updated my kernel"
"check the newsgroups"
"check the forums"
and my PERSONAL favorite: "RTFM"

.. Jerks...

Sometimes I really miss being able to discuss something with people without having to get into a pissing contest with people who think they know everything about something that was around before most of them were born and because they can dink out a script or two think they're H,S, gurus when they don't know *
Sorry. Just been banging my head against the wall over this for a month  and still not getting anywhere.

Since I haven't programmed squat in the last ten years I having a h* off a time trying to follow the source to see if I can find where what has changed.

Oh well. Telle est la vie, so ist Leben,  lo que ser
