I've had mystery keyboard problems in the past on both laptop and external keyboards. Eventually it turned out to be one key that was stuck in a slightly depressed position. But it was very hard to see and I was looking elsewhere for the problem.

Reaper that Inspiron 1100 IS a POS!  I just stripped one down to bare chassis to find the reason for it not powering on. Turns out its in the board so no fix for it  :(
But it didnt take very long to strip it down and the keyboard is very easy to replace if ur sure the problem is that. I saw no way to work on the keyboard itself but check the little cable and make sure its not shorting on something.

you mean easy for dell to replace, i'm not sure how much it costs, i have no keys on my keyboard now, using an external.  i'm dreading putting them back on, ugg
