Having fun with bots article


Playing bots may not be the best training for tournaments, but if you're not playing regular and you just want pick some games it helps to cold turkey.


But playing in a map like DM1 against a bot may be a little boring, bots are basicaly fools and slow bitches with good aim.


I'm going to explain some configurations, advices and resources to make bot gaming some experience.

• The first thing is to choose a good bot, I use the Gladiator.
     
• the second is to decide against how many bots are you going to play with. if the map is not a box with rail it's better play against 2 or more.
• Choose a map, the /GLADIATOR directory must have a .AAS file every map you're going to play, the gladiator pack includes a program to create .AAS files.
• They're not good at picking items so you're most likely gonna rail it easily. To avoid this a good option is to edit a map adding items so they can pick guns and armor and make the game harder, here is a DM1 full of items and with a rail teleport.
     
• Next make a .CFG file with the three bots we're gonna play, from the console we will run it with: exec 3.cfg

• Now we can run the game with these settings:

Dmflags 64 is for running skin teams, don't put male/grunt yourself.
   Watch the rail, if the three of them have it, you're in trouble.

Wellllll,I am not sure wht you mean by the phrase,but here is a thing to do with Eraser bots that I sometimes get in the mood for...

Make one that is an expert in everything,and give it a scarey model,like Alien or something. Then just spawn one on a huge map like the sewer64 maps...and hunt it down,before it hunts you.

Or you can make a skin featuring your roommate's face and spawn a few dozen... that is fun

erasor in CTF with 25 bots & me.  It's insane!  I always make sure it's a smaller level too.... to keep the action up (i did a re-make of dead simple in quake 2, smaller then other remakes & with CTF & runes.  just a bloodbath!).

Never underestimate the power of bots.  Especially if you normally play 3+ DM.  Most people use binds now a days so it's eerily similar to "real people."   

Plus they're a lot fun if you mostly play with friends & they're not around.  Why?  Friends always don't spam "CAMPER!" or "HACKER!" when they loose & neither do bots.

I added a few more for some variety, and I twiddled with all of their stats so that each one is a much more effective opponent within the limitations of being a bot..

just unzip the file into your q2 directory and allow it to overwrite the appropriate files in your tourney directory.
