That's the problem with empty servers....somebody has to be the first to join!  Why shouldn't that someone be you?  "I bet more people would be on the server if this was the case."

Anyway, Wallfly is always there it's never quite empty now is it?

i agree here, but bots are not a good idea. look how it ruined quake3 multiplayer

i try to make an effort to join first but, its pretty boring playing with myself for 30 min before someone connects if at all

what if when a player connects to a server, its broadcasted on all other tasty servers through wallfly?
might annoy people, so should have an option if possible to turn off client side

I like the idea of the broadcast message, however it'd be cool if it were only connections to an empty server and not every single connection.

I like the old fashion way though. Schedule game times here, for example a post that says "Chaos DM every thursday! Who's in?"

Also goto vanilla then type "goto *****" and people tend to follow.

Incidentally, I'm working on a rewrite of our script system, and one of the results of that will be that I'll finally be able to implement the 'invite' command, which I've mentioned on occasion.

The idea is, if 'someplayer' joins the 'chaos' server server, and says...

  someplayer: invite come get some you feeble anthropoids

Then it will broadcast to all servers (in mm2 where possible)

  WallFly[BZZZ]: INVITE: someplayer invites you to GOTO CHAOS - come get some you feeble anthropoids!



Something like that...  (Obviously there will be spam limits on how frequently it can be used per server.)

Hey, that's a good idea quadz. I only hope it follows the same spam rules as mm1. Perhaps even stricter. Here's a bigger idea though: have it also broadcast the invite to the irc bots

As far as player limits goes, I think the coolest thing ever to tackle that was the maplists sorted by player limits. ie maps are selected by player count. Pretty nifty way to keep the map flow dynamic.

I think the invite idea is choice!!

This topic reminds me of how XBox Live has handled it's multiplayer friend system. You have a list and every time someone comes online it lets you know. You can then invite said person to a private chat, game, video conference, or join their game if possible.

It's really handy for people who have a set group of players they like to run with. I have my friends list in Gamespy and it lets me know when there are BTF players online and a few others.

You can use the friends feature of x-fire in a similar manner...

If you set it to do so, it can inform you of any of your buddies going online, or entering games.
You can send them chat messages too.
I kinda like the ability to browse q2 servers that are limitted to the favorites of all my "friends" too..


I think an invite system on Ts would be awesome.
the ability to call someone out from another server might breathe some life back into the tdm scene..
at least you wont have to idle very long to get an opponent on a tourney server.
