Is the DM server on spawn farthest?

Maybe it's just that the DM server has been really crowded lately, well for a while actually, but the instances of getting telefragged seem to be a lot higher than I remember on any other DM servers.  And I don't mean right after spawning, I mean just during a battle or just moving around the map and finding yourself walking over a spawn and someone spawning right there at that moment and killing you, right after I snagged 200 bullets + chain or some armor or something and in full health, grrrrr...

Anyway, I'm assuming that spawn-farthest is not on?  Was it always off?  Maybe it is on and it's just the amount of people in the game.  But if it's off, turning it on should help this situation right?  I'm assuming that spawn farthest checks each spawn-point before it respawns someone and finds the one that has largest player-free radius to it, thereby giving that person the best chance of getting to a weapon/etc. unmolested, AND eliminating, or reducing those pesky mid-action telefrags I mentioned.

Just wanted to inquire about this, and perhaps others have noticed this annoyance as well =)

You're still seeing the telefrags, in the last three days?

I just rewrote the random spawn code last Thursday.  The new code should be essentially identical to spawn farthest as far as avoiding telefrags, but random otherwise.

agreed, seems to be spot on.

i'd hate the random crossing a spawn and getting spawnfragged to be gone completely, i always loved the random fun of that.  But it was chronic for a bit.  Its nice now, the way it is now.

Hi Console -

I also notifced a vast improvement in the number of helpless players directly off the pads, so my cheapshot ratio is even higher now (elesyum eat your heart out).  It is now a lot better than before.  I used to have to wait a little now they just show up all helpless and ready to die.

No, but really, the seeming number of inappropriately spawned players has gone up - it may have just been a volume thing, but I see myself and them getting into more helpless spawning (spwaning in more crowded area - not cool - one step closer to sisters of the worthless miracle - haha).

Telefrags are gone, but helpless player quotient is up as well, and even the best amongst us do not wait for them to get a weapon.

Whatever problem this fixed I will take back any time.

This is now broken in my not so humble opinion.

This fixed the telfragging, but has redefined the spawning dynamic in a bad way.

I consider this a "harmful improvement" if there is such a thing (I know that effort went into this and I do not mean to degrade the effort - habib is a capital-u-User not someone actually contributing anything useful - this I know)

It could just be me whining again - everyone else is silent, so you all must think this is suitable.   

I don't.

Any other opinions on the spawning situation?

But it hasn't redefined anything...!!???

The default dmflags as quake2 is shipped use "spawn random", i.e. NOT "spawn farthest."

The new code is exactly like the original default spawn random, only it avoids telefrags.

Wow, I'm having trouble understanding why setting the server to "spawn random" is suddenly provoking this strong a reaction.  :exqueezeme:  Most of our servers are set to spawn random (again, the default setting), and the dm server has been set to spawn random for periods of time in months past without anyone saying it was somehow weird or that it redefined the spawn dynamic in a bad way.

At least judging from id Software's default q2 settings, spawn random doesn't redefine the spawn dynamic, it is the spawn dynamic.  :beer:

One thing that occurs to me, is that on the other FFA servers, you can just mymap with +sf if you want it.  Or -sf if it's a +sf server like xatrix (where +sf also means avoid spawning next to traps.)

However, on dm, this is currently not possible because the map rotation is fixed.

I remember we had talked before about a sort of "nextmap +pu -ip" command where you could just say, play whatever the next map in the rotation is, but I want it with these flags.

Maybe something like that would work on dm, to allow changing +/-sf for the upcoming map.

then anyone who was having difficulty with the altered setting could change it up as they saw fit..

I can forsee this being used as an exploit by spawncampers, but only those that are aware of it and how it works.
For the most part, this system would seem to be the most logical solution and spawncampers are gonna be spawncampers no matter what dm flags are set..


As long as we don't end up with a quad rotation, then a no-quad rotation, then a -sf rotation, and then a +sf rotation, I'm fine with it. that would just be confusing (it was confusing enough to write...)
