Just posted a topic on my site about a portion of $150,000 going to the winner of this year's Quakecon Quake 2 1v1 tourney!  Will be cool to see who comes out on top...

That's the rules, and they all looks fairly good except for one thing:

powerups are enabled in the 1v1 rounds 

Which means a total change of gameplay when it comes to 1v1 than how q2 has been played over the years. Also doubt any other of the quake games were ever played competetively with powerups on in 1v1. With maps like q2dm3, ztn2dm2 and match1 with quad and even inv on q2dm3 I think we're gonna see a pretty different game than earlier. It's pretty sad in my eyes though, but guess people outside looking in wont see it as such a bad move. Good bye all timing routes and carefull offense/defense play. Hello rush quad or hide for 30 sec.

Yeah, I was really looking forward to the tourney and even hoping top euro players would go showing off some skills. But now I really doubt players like purri even consider going with such a dramatic change to the rules, meaning all previous strategies developed over years on those maps will be to none use whatsoever now that there are an item that will totally ruin the balance of the maps as it were before. It's sad, hoped q2 last appearance in the limelight would be an honorable one, but this smells too much like a joke than anything else.

Anyway, lets pray they just wont touch the powerups even though theyre there, but still just the presence of them makes it sad, as there are money on the line and what is an agreement if there is money to be earned.

As for thresh I have no idea, would be fun finally seeing how "new shcoolers" would fare against good ole thresh. His style is outdated these days though, q2 have grown a lot faster and is a lot more aim oriented than it was back then. But still, there are slow oldschool maps like dm3, ztn2 and match1 in the maplist, so he could probably do better than some on those maps.

Still looking forward to it though, been practicing some with some players going there, doze, mik3d and luci, and they're all great players. As well as my old friend from zone, ni-ux, who suffer from horrid connection and find it hard to prac (but think he will cry his heart out when seeing the rules as well).  Should be fun seeing how they fare as well. Gonna cheer for them for sure.

Ha, nevermind, Luci had a little chat with the guy running the tourney, and made some reason so rules where changed. QUAD is OFF, but powerups are still on (meaning invu will still be on the q2dm3 map).

Anyway, he will talk more to him later trying to convince him to take away invu as well. But I'm happy now, the quad is by far the worst thing that could happen

DAmn that is good news...  maybe we should link the quakecon organizers to this thread and they can get it straight from the community...
