I've noticed that hits from some of the better players (Elysium, Android, ...etc) seem to inflict more damage than similar hits from other players.

yes, that is what it comes down to, aim. You'd think the SS wouldnt have any power at range, but im often surprised at what it does when aimed right at distance. Everyone knows what it does up close, but i think it is often not even considered by many as a medium distance weapon. Of course, it doesnt work great completely across a map, but it does a surprising amount of damage as a medium distance too.

Yes, it is all aim.
Damage of the super shotgun is decided by the spread of the pellets it fires:
Super shotgun fires two sets of 10 pellets, doing 6 damage per pellet; thus, 120 max damage.
With quad, you get 10 pellets, doing 24 damage per pellet; thus, 480 max damage.
Your opponent decides the aim of the shot; but, the game server, not your opponent's computer, decides the spread of the pellets. So, unless you are playing on some kind of hacked server, you can trust the damage effects are all fair.

Yes. It does indeed come down to the aiming of the gun. The SSG shoots it complement of pellets in a roughly circular pattern. How much damage it inflicts depends on how much of the 'circle' is co-inciding with the position of the victim.
Quad SSG is very lame. I hate people that do that. Quad chain is the ultimate in cheapshots and I despise that. Don't do it. Be better than that.

OK then what about BFG damage? Again, when the better players shoot a BFG round at me I can be turned around a corner and I still get pulverized. WTF?!?! But there have been times when I seem to have them cornered and fire a BFG round but they somehow manage to escape unfragged. Again I say WTF?!?! It can't always be that they had mega health, full armor, etc. can it?

HPL, I feelya man, but i think I have a wierd solution.
As the story goes: You log in and your Rockets, Rails, BFGs, SS Shots, Grenades do absolutely no damage to ANYONE except to yourself.
I've done it myself. Everyone in the entire arena has 200 Armor and 200 Health even though there is only one round of Mega and red armor to go around. Your Rocket Launcher is shooting blanks and if your standing within 12 miles of it's splash you die. Others shoot you with a harsh look and you roll over and die. And your like WTF.
I think it has to do with the connection. When it's like that for me I just shut quake down, relaunch and reconnect.
There was one time I couldn't get in a frag regardless of what i hit them with or how much. The only person I clould kill was myself.
After 3 minutes I was -3 frags. I shut Q2 down, relaunched and reconnected, then KA WHAM !!! in 30 sec I had 5 frags to my credit and wound up finishing the map in 4rd place against 12 in the arena.
I think sometimes something just goes screwy with the connection or Quake 2 itself.
