This was due today, wrote it in around 3 very distracting hours. Prof. pulled one on us and all we did was exchange and read them and it's actually due monday. The one thing I've really caught by re-reading it is that I need to elaborate on his 'unfortunate encounters', but then again it takes another pair of eyes to find mistakes in an essay.

    Black men and Public Space is an informative essay aimed to educate the general public through the past events of the author, Brent Staples.  The essay begins depicting the focus of the thesis through an account from the author when he was twenty-two years old. Staples, a graduate student at the University of Chicago, was walking unaccompanied on a near deserted street amongst no one but a white woman in her twenties. Judging by his color, and more so his appearance in general, the woman nervously picked up her pace and eventually fled down the road and out of sight. The main idea is conveyed by the truth of this situation: appearances do not define the type of person one is.
   As a youth Staples was surrounded by crime and grew up as one of the few who alienated themselves from the misdemeanor in his hometown. However, even as one of the
