Hullo there, i'm looking for a possible anwser to my questioooooon..

I want the font from q3 / Call of Duty in q2.. i've searched both games and couldnt find anything inside the pk3 files (well I could, in COD it was a dds file.. no use), but I wondered if anyone knew or had a file that maked q2 text look like q3 text? hrhr

Save the dds file as tga and edit with Wally to make it fit the conchars.pcx. I don't know for sure but I think the working space for q2 text characters is too small to make a nicer font.

after ages of googlign, I found a dds to whatever converter, converted it to PNG, opened in photoshop and made the background black and finally got this.. it "works" but I still need to fill in the bits that didnt fill black that are supposed to be, and it's hard to read.. looks tiny, know any way of fixing that? i'll attatch them, it's in PNG format, so you'll need r1gl, aprq2 or NCGL to view them.

The thing is there isn't enough space in the q2-conchars file to use any other font and still make it readable. In q2, each letter can only take up 8x8 pixels. The original pcx image is 128x128 pixels and you are trying to use a 256x256 png image, so the image is scaled down by Q2 to half its size-> a blurry image. With png's you can use 24bit colors, but when the image is being scaled down you'll lose quite some detail:/ 
I think the q3 font is handled by a .dat file somewhere... however conchars in q3 work in a different way since you can use colored text (read: color overlays). I sort of remember what the q3 text looked like but can you post a screenshot from the q3 console and type out the whole alphabet to refresh my memory? Maybe I can try to draw some q3 style font that fits the q2 size and is still readable (I doubt it though :?).

edit: Nvm, i found some q3 screenshots with text and it's obvious that there's a lot of distinctive empty space around the letters, space that's not available in q2... I will give it a try nonetheless.

those are fonts from Call of Duty btw.. the console font (which is very like q3's style one..)

It wouldn't be difficult to modify your client to use a proportional slice of the image for displaying characters (e.g. 1/16 x 1/16).  That way if your conchars is 128x128, each character is expected to occupy an 8x8 block.  If it's 256x256, it'll break it into a 16 pixel grid. Perhaps an entirely different and better aproach would be to use SDL_TTF, ala Cube and Sauerbraten.
