need firewall and spyware

HeY all

I am setting up a comp for a friend and need spyware protection and a firewall

I checked sygate and zonealarm... none FREE there.

I also went to Lavasoft and none FREE there either.

It would be great if someone knows an alternitive.

Zone Alarm lite, or whatever the free one is called (there is a free one), is good for a firewall.

Not sure about spyware protection, just use firefox, and run Spybot S&D here and there for piece of mind.  I'm not an expert on either subject.

firefox will help cut down on spyware the most though for sure

unless your a real experinced computer user, i wouldnt go near firewalls
they can be a huge headache, not worth the effort to setup at all

I can fully vouch for the firefox thing. I've had XP installed for 3 days, I ran Ad-Aware SE yesterday, 39 critical objects, 10 were a programs reg keys (wasnt spyware, regardless of what it said), the rest where.. drumroll.. Internet Explorer objects! hidden in IE's cache + cookies.. yay data miners, yay microsoft.

how i stay safe from that shit:

dont look at porn.

dont use antispyware shit.

i cant say im truly safe, but also havent been seeing any weird shit on my machine.

Spybot has realtime protection called TeaTimer, it pops up when something wants to change the registry.

Yes Firefox can cut down on it, becuase it doesn't use ActiveX, but your still vulnerable to things that use Java.  So I would make sure if you have Java installed to disable it in firefox for normal browsing, and only enable it when you need it.

Firewalls are not a huge headache, and telling people to stay away from them is bad advice.

Porn's not bad, you just have to know where to get it.  Bittorent trackers are the way to go for that, and if you want an invite to an adult video tracker, I have four invites to one.

Antispyware programs are not bad, Spybot is a good one, but there are a lot of them that are bad.  There's a list of bad ones here, http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

I think Firewalls are annoying. You constantly have to tweak it and fool around with it because some web site is not loading or some file is not loading.

BTW does one of you know a way to disable Macromedia Flash in Firefox?

If you're using Firefox....try using "NoScript" http://www.noscript.net/whats It will block the java scripts from running unless you enable them.

It allows you to select which one's to allow based on the URL they are comming from.

EG:
Planetquake.com

• Allow scripts from Gamespy.com
• Forbid Googlesyndication.com

If a site has those annoying add banners that try to load up and take up the screen space they will be blocked. It's really handy.
