IRC? Please!?
«

I'm so bored at school, and after trying to get on a web based IRC here, I give up on my own, can anyone/does anyone know of any web based IRC? Note: this school has active X controls disabled, doesent have java installed, and blocks a fair few things, ive tried the following:
ETG's web based chat
CGI:IRC - none will let me connect to #tastyspleen
Installing mIRC on a USB Key, didnt work.

adam, i know how to do it : )
it's probably a royal pain in the ass , but I do this at work.
the easiest way to set things up, is to use vnc.
vnc is like pcanywhere, so when you go to use irc, you'll be using it from your home computer.
first though, you need to see if the proxy server, will let you access a web page if it was hosted at your ip. if not there are other ways as well
you open an ssh client , use putty, because you can run putty through a proxy, if your school only allows a proxy to the web.
then in tunnel rules, you set one up for vnc. you also have to make a change to vnc, to allow it to point to localhost (because remote control software doesn't like to connect to itself kinda like looking in a mirror to a mirror to a mirror)
search for using ssh port forwarding, if you can't find anything i'll dig up a tutorial.
need ssh putty, and vnc
and an ssh server, openssh is an okay windows server
ip connection is like this
school<<proxy<<home home<<irc
you control home from school
vnc is pointed to your ip at your local machine at school
ssh is told to take that, and send it through the tunnel
ssh server unwraps it, and sends it to your home pc
there's your remote connection now click irc : )
you'll probably need a tutorial, there's a lot out ther

tutorial how to do exactly as above.
things that might be different
article explains this using unix, and i'm not sure if they needed to use a proxy, if you needed to use a proxy at school
go to proxy in putty, and put in the proxy
I did this years ago when there were no articles, was a lot of experimenting, things work more reliable now too

The lesson is just not to do anything at school... its not worth it because you're just going to get caught and your account will be locked. Plus, they have deepfreeze so you're fucked unless you know the password for it. Plus, the keyboards and mice are sick. Just bring your laptop, hook into WIFI and you can do whatever the hell you want from there.

mr x.
the logs on the proxy and firewall show traffic that looks like ssl, which is legitamate traffic, since you will run the ssh server on tcp port 443. also it's encrypted so no one knows what it is - not that anyone is looking at the logs in the first place. and even if they did, they would think it's legit traffic, or not know what the hell you were doing
wifi would require the same setup
the only problems you could encounter are.
installing the putty and vnc viewer executable, where as restrictions are easily circumvented
the proxy does not allow you to go to that specific site (your home ip) - which is abnomral configuration because for useability more proxy restrictions are by sex/gambling etc..
and if so,
i would use aim (if possible) to search for an open port to the internet without the proxy
or use nmap which would require some networking knowledge to determine what is open through the fw
peace
