This is just cool.

http://www.onegreenplanet.org/news/hand-raising-a-baby-songbird/

Kinda related,... over the weekend I stepped outside at about 12am to have a smoke. It was dark as hell out but I could barely make out something in the middle of the driveway in front of my garage door. Got closer and still couldn't make it out. I was figuring it was a toad because I've seen several toads on the driveway or walkway before at night just sitting and waiting for bugs to come by that they can eat. So I flicked my Zippo trying to get a better look at it and bent down trying to get closer. I was gonna poke it with a finger thinking if it were a toad, it would hop away. But by the time my finger got about 3 inches from it, I could finally see that it was something a little taller than a toad. Went back inside and got a flashlight, and it was a baby bird just sitting there not moving. They say that if you touch a baby bird with your hands, the mother won't have anything to do with it afterwards, so I nudged it with my foot just trying to see if it was even alive since it didn't move at the sight of me and a flashlight. It kinda hopped for about 3 hops and started chirping.

If it had been during the day, I would've just shooed it over under the trees where it's nest probably was, but it was night. And like I've said before, some of the neighbors around here leave their god damn cats out at night and I've seen them wandering around my yard at night before, even found dead birds and messes of feathers a few times where they've killed doves bedding down in the pinestraw flower bed/garden areas before. If cats would actually EAT the damn birds, that'd be one thing. But they don't. They just kill them for the fun of killing something. I would've felt bad if I came out the next morning and found feathers everywhere, so I got a little cardboard box and a hand towel and came back outside. Used the towel to cover the bird and put him into the box so I wouldn't touch it directly with my hands. Kept him inside in the box overnight. After about 20 mins it finally stopped scurrying around in the box and went to sleep. By the time the sun started coming it, it started chirping like nuts. So at about 9 or 10am, I put it back outside again. It already could hop and had all its regular feathers, so it was almost ready to learn flying anyway. Had it been much younger I might've kept it longer and fed it until it could fly. Didn't see it again out there later that day. So hopefully it made it okay. Either that or maybe one of the red tailed hawks in the area spotted it and snatched it up. That doesn't make me feel as bad as a cat getting it though. Hawks EAT baby birds all the time and actually survive off of them. Cats just kill them for no good reason.

So, see, I don't just KILL Bambi and shit like a mean ole redneck hunter. Not the first time I've ever given wildlife a helping hand either. Years back when I was completing some community service for a probation stint, I was working for the city at the local water/sewage department. Was out running a mower through one of the fields when I noticed a hawk getting after something on the ground by the pipeline. Rode over and he flew off with something in his claws. Looked around the ground where I saw him, and saw a shallow hole with these little guys all huddled together in the bottom. Baby jack rabbits. They're eyes weren't even open yet.

So I figured what I saw getting hauled off by the hawk was the mother because it was much larger than these little dudes. So rather than leaving them to become hawk food or starve to death on their own, I gathered them into a box, took them home that afternoon, and "tried" to raise them myself. Got a little eyedropper and some formula and tried feeding them but they just wouldn't eat more than a few tiny nibbles of it. Ended up having to take them the next day about 100 miles south to the one and only wildlife rehabilitation center in the entire state that would agree to take them on. Doubt they survived, the people there said that even with their expertise, they usually didn't have a lot of luck hand raising baby jack rabbits.

It's a myth that parent birds will reject their babies if handled by humans.
What usually happens is the first-hatched or stronger siblings push the runts or later hatchlings out of the nest in competition for food. Parents feed the chick with the most insistent open beak. Nature can be cruel.
If it was a fledgling then the nest might have been in the eaves of the garage or in the trees nearby. They try to fly and end up flopping on the ground, then they are in real danger from your neighbor's cats or varmints.
The best course of action with fledglings is to put them back in the nest if you can find it and get to it without risking your neck, or any place of concealment where they can regain strength and learn to fly before they get eaten.
Darwin sides with the strong and the fortunate.

Maybe a myth, I dunno, but I wasn't gonna test it.

Most species shove them out of the nest at a certain point anyway. I've had doves build a nest on top of one of the columns under my front porch for the last 3 winters/springs. They usually have 2 to 3 babies and push them out by mid to late spring. Last year they had 2 they pushed out. And usually they hide under one of the holly bushes in front of the porch for shade until they get smart enough to fly away within a few days to a week. But last year they sat out there well over a full month before they finally left. Lucky for them, rabbits had taken up residence in the hole under the garage right there by those bushes. Because what originally dug that hole was a fucking skunk. Went out one morning just before sunrise to have a smoke with my morning coffee and the little bastard ran by about 4 feet from where I was standing, squirting stink juice as he ran, luckily not AT ME though. Never got a chance to exterminate his ass, he got wise and left voluntarily I guess. Anyway, not sure if skunks eat birds, but I'd imagine they might if one as stupid as a baby dove sat there for them.

The pudús are two species of South American deer from the genus Pudu, and are the world's smallest deer.

Cute. Is that an adult Pudu or a fawn. North American deer lose their spots.
