Q2 Invite Cup: Results
« on: October 28, 2013, 04:56:21 PM »
It's finally done.

Results:

1st) naymlis
2nd) adrenaline
3rd) Slugs
-full bracket here: http://challonge.com/q2invite_cup

Even though it took like 2-3 months to finish this tournament, I guess the tournament was a bit of a success since it actually got finished. Having drop outs suck but it seems to be the nature of the Q2 scene in general, I guess.

I'd say the main reason why I ran the tournament was to see people play and enjoy seeing how certain match ups I haven't seen often or before, would unfold. I think that ended up happening and here a few of the matches I enjoyed watching and recommend people to watch: kickr0 vs pyrex, adrenaline vs naymlis (loser finals), and slugs vs vae.

I think I learned quite a bit from trying to run this cup and the novice cup I ran during the summer, and I would have to give that thanks to haunted, naymlis, pyrex, and adrenaline. I had quite a lot of problems trying to find a good balance with my rule set for double elimination. They helped me a lot with creating a good rule set would that be balanced for double elim. The thing is that I am use to double elimination, but in fighting games like Street Fighter, where you usually don't have very specific rules for picking stages/maps based on how far you are in the bracket.

The final order of business though is probably to try to organize the demos more easily, for people's viewing pleasure. I'll post that here in this thread but it will probably be awhile until I can do this. Also, get the results for the finals. I don't even remember the scores and I forgot to take screenshots.  :dohdohdoh:

Yeah, I'm planning to do another one of those this winter. I'm hoping Erica can help me out attracting those koth players because I didn't have any luck earlier. Some of the players I asked didn't seem interested in playing, but I'm not sure what were the reasons why. If it's due to them not thinking that they would do well, I doubt that and I think they would have done good considering how balanced the overall player skill minus a player, for the last cup. Also, if I run another one I'd have to let the current champ Kyper sit out (if he would be interested in playing that is) on this next one since I want other folks to get a chance to win.

i would play but i have been out for a week. NO Q2 FOR A WEEK GOD DAMMIT  :ubershock: My old pc psu blew up lost everything  :LAME:. should have my new box by the end of the week hopefully

There is no rush to fix your computer. I think on IRC I said I would be able to run this thing in late November but I would prefer a time that is closer to Christmas.

That sounds cool.  I don't know who is allowed to play, but I'd be interested.

As for Kyper, I think he should be allowed to play, but not eligible for prizes(if any).  The more the merrier, right?   Perhaps if enough 'higher-end' skilled players showed interest, you should just split them into their own tournament or tournament bracket.

And the 'novice' name should be reconsidered, IMO.  None of these players are novices by any definition.  The last tournament consisted of LONG time tourney players, most of which only play the competitive mods.  'Novice' would indicate new to quake2 or at least new to tournament play; all of the players in the last tournament were neither.

And perhaps a prize should be to get to play you as an afterfinals match like they used to do in QW.

That sounds cool.  I don't know who is allowed to play, but I'd be interested.

The event is open to players who want to get into duel but are new to the mod and want to get into it. I also have a skill level cutoff but it won't really work unless you play duel already or FFA. So you are better off telling me what main alias you usually use on the servers, and who you usually lose to and/or beat.

As for Kyper, I think he should be allowed to play, but not eligible for prizes(if any).  The more the merrier, right?   Perhaps if enough 'higher-end' skilled players showed interest, you should just split them into their own tournament or tournament bracket.

Yeah with Kyper it is pretty tricky. He's a good FFA player and rarely never duels (to my knowledge), but his Q2 fundamentals were strong enough to blow through most of the competition, where only the 2nd and 3rd place finishers could give him a challenge. That is sort of why I think I might be better off running completely different bracket with players closer to his skill level. My main intention with this cup is so that players are more closely matched up to players at their skill level, so they can have fun and learn how to duel. Doing this is not easy since most of the players who competed in my previous novice cup or would compete in the next one, either don't play or duel often on the servers for me to make a better estimation on how their skill matches up to their peers.

Yes, I agree that "novice" was not the greatest descriptor to use. I don't think it is a very motivating name for a tournament that is suppose to attract newer players. Due to that for awhile I was using the term "rookie" to describe the cup, but I ended up stopping that because I didn't want confuse people into thinking that I was running two events instead of one. Yeah anyway, I'm hoping to come up with better names for these tournaments. They are far too generic. :x

I think though saying "novice" was a bit of a fair claim. 80% of the players who participated I don't really see dueling on the servers frequently, and if you compare their skill level to the more experienced duel players, their skill for sure would be novice-like. I'd prefer to use the term rookie over that however.
