So my Vista box I guess decided to have a stroke and is braindead (bluescreen'ed out of nowhere and did a memory dump).  It turns on, but just sits there endlessly with the "hp" screen up and is completely unresponsive to go into the BIOS and all that.

Whatever, it was a piece of shit anyway.

So I have this new box now and I just re-installed Quake 2 on it.  It has Windows 7.  I thought Win7 was supposed to be easier to deal with but I'm having issues already.  For starters, I had to Google how to install Quake 2 since all it would do on autoplay was bring up Windows Media Player and start playing the music on it like it was a goddamn music CD.  I found a video thankfully that helped me get it installed (did some manual steps).

Now here's where the fun starts.  Apparently I can't play on the DM servers without getting kicked for an AC violation.  This is idiotic because I have my entire Quake2 folder backed up on a flash drive, and simply imported it directly in.  I never got any violations of any kind on my old box.  BTW, my vid_ref is "gl" ...and I'm in default openGL.  :<

At least one good thing has come out of this.  I average over 350 fps now, so finally I can see what I can actually do or not, without my computer standing in the way.  Anyway, if anyone knows WTF is going on, please help.  And also, please don't start in with any idiocy on this topic.  I really need some help with this (that means non-troll time-wasting bullshit please).  Thank you.


edit:  I thought I could take simple screenshots with Prt Scr button and paste into MSPaint, but obviously not.  This is really starting to get irritating.

Movement is also fucked.  Having issues with jumping; double jump script isn't working but maybe 1 out of 5 times, and definitely not while moving period.

The only way I can even play is with regular q2 at the moment, which is very fucking gay.  help

This seems strange. I've had no issues with q2 on Win 7, which I've used for at least 2 or 3 years, and I've used a similar setup like you're describing with my q2 able to run out of a self-contained folder that I just copy over and play from without having to install. I have run q2 on at least 5 or 6 different computers running Win 7 over that time too. Having said that, I've only run Win 7 Ultimate 64, so there could be differences in what you have.

Try installing the Q2 Starter Elysium setup and see if that works:

I switched to using this install and Q2PRO a few months back and it's much better than the old self-contained running version of r1q2 that I ran for years. No crashes, period for one thing.

There's an r1q2 version of the installer on that page too, linked below the main download button "Looking for the R1Q2 version? Download v1.2.3 ". If you're going to participate in any tournaments, etc that need anti-cheat, you'll have to install that one.

You reference "AC violation", are you forced AC? If so, I'm guessing your AC is being blocked by some crapware anti-virus that came pre-installed with your new box. You may already do this, but if you get a computer from one of the main manufacturers, you need to wipe it immediately and install a clean, fresh version of Windows 7.  For Windows 7, I'd recommend uninstalling any anti-virus or such that came pre-installed and just using Microsoft Security Essentials.

lol i wouldn't trust the ms antivirus, sure its not bad... but its not great either

something like avast on there helps a ton and you just have to add the exception...




ex, you can try running r1q2 in xp compatibility mode, and make sure you have direct mouse input enabled... i have had some sporadic issues with win7 not wanting to let r1q2 load the anticheat.dll but overall it is fine and works 90% of the time, so if it is consistent it is most definitely AV

also might help to scrap the default opengl that comes with q2 and use r1gl since it has some nice features and will likely work much better for you

all else fails, do a fresh install of q2 (just rip the paks over or something from the disk), drop in a new up to date version of r1q2 and r1gl, then rebuild your configs

You can try double clicking your jump key.
That usually works.

ex: it's kicking for unknown renderer. Possibly the ref_gl.dll was mangled in transfering it to/from the external/thumbie.

Try setting your vid_ref to r1gl and see if it continues to kick you. If it doesn't do it with that one, I can provide a stock copy of the ref_gl.dll for you to dl.

I haven't really encountered any problems with Win7 and Q2. If you have the original factory game CD, yeah, I seem to remember it not autoplaying correctly when inserting the disk. I think I had to let it spin up then it would immediately run the registration exe rather than the installation exe.

I just hunted down my CD and stuck it in to see what it would do. This time it's not autoplaying at all. But what you're gonna want to do is click on the CD drive icon and open the CD. In the top directory, there'll be a "setup.exe". On older machines running Win98 and maybe WinXP, this would normally run everything you need to install it, but it doesn't seem to be working properly for Win7. So instead, click to open the "D:/install" folder. In that folder, you'll have ANOTHER "setup.exe". Click THAT one and that should start installing it for you.

Once you get that installed, then locate the 3.20 update somewhere and then unzip that to update the game. Once that's done, then you'll probably also want to install your client. Download and install R1Q2 and R1gl. Then you'll probably also want to install the anticheat module, so download that, then run the updater if there's one with it to update it completely. I don't seem to recall the Win7 firewall or Windows Defender (or whatever its called) having any problems with AC. Maybe when you first run it it might popup asking if you want to allow anticheat to have authorization to "make changes to this computer", and I think that's basically the firewall allowing you to give AC the authorization to communicate with the AC server. So if you do all that and Q2 will run but won't seem to allow AC to load, just come back and ask about it and maybe I can walk you through how to manually reset the firewall restriction for AC.

The only gripe I have about Win7 being a pain is how it's designed with multiple program files folders that can sometimes confuse the shit out of you when trying to modify program files to tweak certain games. But the really only happens if the game program is located in the Program Files folder. Since Q2 is located in C:/Quake2, the operating system doesn't have multiple hidden program files folders rules to effect any modifications you might make to files. I guess when they designed Win7, they wanted to make it idiot proof to prevent people or programs from modifying original program files files so they set it up to create a hidden secondary program files folder so that any modifications to files would be duplicated in that secondary hidden folder rather than screwing with the original ones and possibly damaging the program to where it wouldn't function. This probably sounds like fucking gibberish, not really important, just thought I'd mention it though.

I found out this box had a bunch of viruses and other shit on it from the previous owner :p , so I did a full system wipe and reinstalling everything fresh.  Gonna see how it goes, will posts the results momentarily...  :>
