J.J.Abrams ... and others

Ever been confused about the unfettered fan love thrown towards the hollywood type of the day? I know there are lots of examples, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck to name a few. When these people start to get popular (usually only after doing their best and most memorable work) it seems like people put the "fanatic" back into being a fan. People seem to just think everything that person does turns to gold and set aside any kind of criticism of movies that person is in... only to forget about this silly fandom when things go wrong.

M. Night Shyamalan is another good example. The world loved him to the point that his first real bomb (preceded by some simply non-memorable bad movies) destroyed his career.

I'm wondering if anyone else has a celebrity in mind for this. Not someone who just always sucked and somehow got popular among mindless teens. I'm talking about someone who did something awesome and then gets a free pass on everything else in life. They may not have failed yet, or they may never fail. It doesn't matter because it's about the undue credibility that that person receives, not necessarily how talented the person is.

I'm starting to suspect this of J.J. Abrams. I think that he did some great work. I also think that he has produced a lot of crap. I think that everyone who seems to view him as this super awesome pop culture icon are going to be sorely disappointed soon. From behind the scenes he's probably going to continue to make some pretty cool stuff... but the world's gonna get tired of light artifacts and "Super 8-separate movies that shouldn't have been hacked together"

Opinions on Abrams? Anybody else that you think should never have gotten the free-pass fandom?

Nicolas Cage, getting a free pass for his relation to Francis Ford Coppola.  Wish he would go away.

I loved him in Raising Arizona, he played a great trailer trash redneck... because he IS one. Dude makes tons of money and decorates his house with gigantic gold framed velvet Elvis portraits.

That's exactly my point.  The only reason he got that movie is because of his relation to his uncle.  Hell, he even rode the coattails by putting his name as "Nicolas Coppola" in the movie's credits.

I guess having said that, one of his most recent movies, "Knowing", wasn't all that bad.  But only because him along with everyone in the entire world dies.

nnnnNo. Raising Arizona was a Coen Brothers film. 99% sure the opening and closing credits list his last name as Cage. Perhaps you're thinking of an even older movie.

I agree. I liked Nicolas Cage's films growing up, but I always lumped him together with John Travolta and Christian Slater. Only good in movies some of the time. (To varying degrees). Strange amounts of fan love towards Cage is something that really puts me off about him. That and seeing the "Face Off face" in every single one of his movies since 1997.
