Harry Potter and other myths
« on: May 18, 2012, 05:57:31 PM »
And with age comes experience. You learn how to deal with children who need to be told stories
Ahah. Well ya got me! I thought you were serious with all the Jesus stuff. :dohdohdoh:
Quadz, I see you're not a man of faith.

That's true.  I do think extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

From my point of view, faith is not a virtue.  Faith is an abdication of reason and a suppression of one's critical faculties of the kind that allows people to believe things on bad evidence, such as the claims of noted fraudster Joseph Smith about seer stones and golden plates and the Garden of Eden being located in western Missouri.

Smith's claims should be transparently obvious as a con job to any thinking person - except anyone taking them on faith.

Faith also supports the belief that the Jesus story is special, when instead it fits neatly into the traditional mythical hero archetype:

Quote
The hero scale from Lord Raglan's The Hero (1936)

1: The Hero's mother is a royal virgin.
2: His father is a king and
3: often a near relative of his mother, but
4: the circumstances of his conception are unusual, and
5: he is also reputed to be the son of a god.
6: At birth an attempt is made, usually by his father or his maternal grandfather, to kill him, but
7: He his spirited away, and
8: reared by foster-parents in a far country.
9: We are told nothing of his childhood, but
10: on reaching manhood he returns or goes to his future kingdom.
11: After a victory over the king and/or a giant, dragon, or wild beast,
12: he marries a princess, often the daughter of his predecessor, and
13: becomes king.
14: For a time he reigns uneventfully, and
15: prescribes laws, but
16: later he loses favor with the gods and/or his people, and
17: is driven from the throne and city, after which
18: He meets with a mysterious death,
19: often at the top of a hill.
20: His children, if any, do not succeed him.
21: His body is not buried, but nevertheless
22: he has one or more holy sepulchres.

I think quadz was trying to segregate his posts from the ones that were derogatory/unfriendly/irrelevant to his. mine were relevant to this somewhat, although I may have tore into you a little harder than I should have.

Well how about we move it into that thread and find out, instead of starting another one?

I'm not sure the truth or falsity of a proposition is dependent on how it's indexed in a database.

Personally I find this linear style of forum tends to have active threads that get overwhelmed by many digressions.  So, working within the toolset available, I've branched the topic to follow a particular line of reasoning?

Gilgamesh scores 15

It should also be noted that the Epic of Gilgamesh predates the Torah and yet contains many eerily similar stories.

Just to provide one example of the many, here's the first thing google returned on a search for "gilgamesh vs genesis"

Are you pointing out that Genesis is used as a historical account, yet the epic of gilgamesh is considered to be mythology.........but with all these similarities?

Or do you think that  hebrew(s) likely used the contents of this poem to make genesis? or both?

you'd have a point either way, but the existence of a flood may not be a myth. the fiction behind the stories is, yeah, but I guess I could see an actual very bad flood being exaggerated over the generations, turning into something of apocalyptic origin. Seems right up mankind's ally, actually, lol.

Well I think most scientists agree that... uh... in the beginning... the earth was completely covered in water. No, it's obviously NOT a historically accurate account of anything. Nor is the book of Genesis in it's entirety any more full of actual truthful accounts of history than the Epic of Gilgamesh. If everyone died in the flood, then Noah and his kids all fucked each other in order to continue the human race. God doesn't like sin, he forbids bestiality, he forbids children to "look upon their fathers nakedness" (if I remember the whole story of Abraham passing out drunk in a tent correctly)  ... but fucking your sister is okay? Yeah, the bible conveniently leaves out an explanation for why the Noah clan didn't eventually become a tribe of deformed mutants from inbreeding.

Didn't one of the characters in Harry Potter turn out to be gay? Clearly a plot by the homosexual community to destroy our moral society by brainwashing children to think that homosexuality is acceptable.

On this note, they just made the green lantern a faggot (bundle of sticks) (not that he wasn't already, but the "character" is now openly gay..)
